From the collection of the founder of the Horseless Carriage Club. Original handmade dealer album for early White steam cars, used at the White Garage, 712 S. Broadway, Los Angeles. Leather bound, 13 X 10" photo-album style, with 88 permanently bound pages, plus onionskin overlays between all pages. Each page has hand applied original photos, testimonial letters, and telegrams focusing on the White Steam Cars of 1907 through 1909. In all, the album contains (47) original photos, (24) original testimonial letters (most written to White Garage, Los Angels), (20) telegrams (most from The White Company, or Walter C. White or to the White Garage in Los Angeles, informing of the latest White performance in a Hill Climb or endurance contest or road race), (2) news clippings, and (1) White Bulletin from The White Company, San Francisco. Most photos are captioned in hand, with white lettering; the thrust of the captions it to convey to the prospective buyer the quality and durability of White cars.
Dealer Albums are the rarest of automobile literature. Used by dealerships to help sell autos to prospective customers, they became popular with car companies in the 30's, but were very unusual before that. This is the earliest dealer album we've seen, or heard of, by a large margin. It may well be the first dealer album ever used by a dealership, it is very likely the oldest dealer album still in existence.
Original photos include Mount Diablo Summit (7); President Roosevelt in his White Steamer at Oyster Bay; White at the 1907 Chicago Auto Show; Hower Trophy; Twin Peaks S.F (2); White Steamer with Express Body, used by Diamond Tire; Glidden Tour; White Steamer Ambulance used by Philadelphia General Hospital (2); Soledad Canyon Crossing; three White Steamers in use by Rio de Janiero Police Dept; Mt Baldy 100 mile race gold medal; Mt. Baldy race with wrecked Elmore; Del Monte Endurance Run, S.F.; Del Monte Sealed Bonnet Run S.F.; White Steamer in race trim at 1908 Quaker City Endurance run; Fernando Nelson Cup (Los Angeles to S.F.) 1905 & 1908; Buena Vista Hill Climb 1908; 1908 Steamer, First Prize in S.F. Auto Show; S.F. Fillmore St Hill Climb 30% grade 1908; Mt. Baldy race 1907; Los Angeles to San Diego round trip record 1908.
Telegrams include 1907 Glidden Tour; 1907 Lake County Run & Hill Climb; 1907 Santa Rosa Race; 1907 South Harting, England, Hill Climb; 1907 Hower Trophy win AAA NY Run; Cleveland Hill Climb; 600 mile Sealed Bonnet Contest; S.F. Del Monte Endurance Run; 1907 Mt. Tamalpais Hill Climb; Buena Vista Hill Climb; Fort George Hill Climb; Harrisburg Endurance Run; Salt Lake Free-for All win; 1908 Kansas City 10 mile race; Chicago Reliability Contest 1908. All telegrams are original to the era, and original to this album. A few have a handwritten notation indicating "copy of original."
The testimonial letters run from 1907 through 1909, and include a letter (marked "copy") from Col. W. F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) dated 3/22/09 requesting to drive a White Steamer while in Chicago, and also recounting a meeting he'd had with President Taft in which he argued for allowing Steam Cars inside Yellowstone Park.
An amazing piece of White history. In Good condition considering its age- album cover is well worn, with "White" lettering on cover well faded. Two interior photos are torn, some of the onionskin pages separating the primary pages have small tears or folds. There is some yellowing to the telegraphs, and to some of the testimonial letters. The original photos are generally in good condition. One has come loose; and one page has been trimmed from the album (this likely done by it's author as it was being created). From the collection of Art Twohy, one of the founders of the Horseless Carriage Club, a White owner who lived in Los Angeles.
