1963 Mercury Comet S-22
Convertible - Classic! Red with white top
Pretty car! It's the 1963 Mercury Comet S22
Convertible with the Rocketship taillights! My neighbor kids ask me if it's a
rocket because of the cool taillights. Everyone that sees it loves it. My older
kids want me to keep it so they can drive it when they turn 16.But, I’m ready to have the garage space back
so we can put in bumper pool & air hockey.
PRICE IS FIRM.
I'll give you the best description I can. BUT, you agree NOT to rely on my
description. You either come see it before you bid, or you send a mechanic, or
you take it AS-IS, WHERE-IS, and let the buyer beware! I don't mean in any way
to deceive. Look at my feedback-it’s 100% since 1998. I've just
learned that what one person thinks is good condition, another calls fair
condition, etc. I don't know enough about cars and about this car to really
give you a good assessment. I'm going to describe every little bad thing and it
may sound like this car has a ton of problems but in reality it's far nicer
than the 1963 Comet Convertible I drove everywhere for years until I sold it 9
years ago. I've owned a lot of old convertibles and this is in the nicest shape
of any of them. Not a show car, maybe a 3 on a scale of 1-5, but everything's
there and looks great and the top and upholstery aren't torn and look nice and
the hubcaps are all there (plus an extra in the trunk). Of course, I say a
"3" and you may say a "2" or “4”, don't know, so come see
it.
Having said all that, this is a really cool car. It's the S22 which means
bucket seats and a center console. The car runs and drives and seems to be
pretty complete. The engine looks really clean. The radio is there. The seats
are in nice shape with no tears. The top is in nice shape with no tears. The
boot cover is nice too. The dashboard cover has no tears. The Firestone tires
seem to be pretty new. I think the engine is a straight six 170 and it
definitely has automatic transmission.
It has current California
registration & insurance (but of course you have to get your own insurance).
When I got it, I immediately drove it to Holley’s Tires in San Clemente and had them
put on new brakes and a new master cylinder. Here's what they did-I'm typing it
from their invoice: Front/Rear drum brake job, remove :& replace front/rear
brake shoes, master cylinder, machine 4 drums, service bearings where
applicable, clean/bleed/adjust/roadtest. They list these materials: Brake shoe
set Bendix R528, Wheel Cylinder AUT-W-53100, Hardware Kit CAR 17358, Grease Seal
CRI 15805, DOT 3 Brake Fluid, Master Cylinder 47-39011. I spent $810.86.
I later took it to Christian Auto in San
Clemente. They put in a new condensor and a new
radiator and a new ignition cylinder. I think they may also have replaced front
end bushings or something. I asked them to inspect the car and fix what needed
fixed.
Also, I bought a brand new battery, the longest warranty one from Wal-Mart.
It starts right up and is ready to drive. I haven’t
driven it much but it’s FUN to take out!
Everything looks great and really clean under the hood. Maybe someone restored
it because it all looks so good. The firewall has fresh paint, engine and air
cleaner cover all look really clean, battery looks fairly new, belts and hoses
look pretty new, oil filter looks clean and new. But like I said, I'm not an
expert and it may be that someone just did a lot of painting and cleaning.
Here’s some details:
• Top is electric and goes up and down fine.
• Glove compartment box is in nice shape.
• There’s also a really cool looking storage console between the bucket seats.
• There’s not really enough room for me to be comfortable in the front seat.
I’m 6’3” and 260 pounds and it just isn’t quite big enough for me-I have to
squeeze into the car. Maybe you could have the seat moved back, I don’t know,
but if you’re as big as me, maybe this isn’t a great fit for you either. That’s
the main reason I’m not excited to keep this car.
• The chrome is all there but has not been rechromed. The "Comet" on
each side has part of the "t" broken. The S22 emblem on the passenger
side is missing. The trim is a little loose in places. The fender cover on one
side seems to need to be reattached.
• The door lock buttons are plastic and the threads are stripped. Same with the
window opener handles, seem to be loose and at least one needs to be attached
better because it comes off.
• The antenna is broken and needs to be replaced. Radio looks good but doesn’t
work.I haven’t checked fuse, etc,
because I was just planning to put in a fancy stereo but haven’t gotten to
it.
• The black carpet is faded and should be dyed or replaced.
• The upholstery is nice and not faded
• I had it painted in the past year, $700.00 paint job, the same color red as
when I got it.It’s got a couple dings. Looks nice!
I don't see any rust on the car including a quick glance
underneath-I'll email you the photos of underneath if you want.
Mileage is unknown. The number above is what the
odometer shows, but I have no way of knowing
OK, I told you pretty much every bad thing I could find. But, I love this car,
thing it's so cool. My kids don't want me to ever sell it. They and everyone
that sees it just say WOW over and over. It's such a cool looking car and when
I had one of these 9 years ago it was super fun to drive.
Let me know what questions you have. Serious inquiries only. Email me for
