The Gods can be cruel brothers of the open road. Bike and below description originally posted Sunday 10/25/09. This is a re-list with new photos because, with unusually warm temps (65) last Sunday, I decided to take the bike for “One Last Ride.” Slowly turning left from a state highway to country road, intersection was covered with loose, “black sand” type material from recent road work because it had never been swept clean (the fine-grind aggregate was exact color of pavement so it didn’t catch the eye the way pebbles would). One second I was in a gentle, approx. 10 mph lean, the next I was on my left side. S**T!!! I was uninjured because I ride geared up (major scrape on left visor area of helmet). Bike received scrape on fairing, turn signal broke, and scrape on clutch handle. I was quite PO’d, especially given the timing. Adding further insult, the start button chose this moment to fall apart (weird, since it fell on left side and was not hard hit--I simply stood up like I’d slipped down on a bicycle). Plastic button and spring behind it vanished. I won this auction (item 380170920705) for ’85 VF700 switch assembly, which I believe will bolt on, and I hope to have installed ASAP. Since I’m not inclined to repair fairing at this time, I lowered the reserve as compensation for 10/25 incident. Clutch handles are easy to come by and are under $20, so it’s up to buyer to change it or not. I also forgot to mention before that front tire was brand new this spring. The front left 3/4 view is a new, post-incident photo, as is the tighter shot of upper front left area with damage visible. As I said below, contact me with any questions. I’ll provide cell number to serious parties only for further info. Also just noticed this stock right hand mirror available: (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230392958110&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) Left hand on mine is OEM Honda, right side is inexact aftermarket. Still a very above average condition ’83 VF750F. ______________________________________________________________________
1983 Honda Interceptor VF750F (year one, series one, VIN: JH2C1501DM003721). Hailed as the original sport bike. Not restored, just a well preserved survivor with recent, high-quality repaint.
I purchased this Interceptor in Feb. 2008 in non-running condition from Cincinnati, OH Honda dealer with 29,175 miles. Major issue was fuel leaks, and dirt in the carburetors after long-term storage. It had already been repainted to factory, Canada delivery colors (U.S. models were red, white and blue--I prefer this scheme). Some cam chain noise on front cylinder head remains.
Cracked and broken plastic fuel-transfer tubes between carburetors were replaced with new aluminum ones. Carbs were removed and rebuilt by Peter Egan’s motorcycle mechanic, whose shop is nearby. He also performed compression test and reported that all four cylinders were within 5 percent of original factory specs. I asked him about the cam noise and he replied “Ride it.” (“I can do that.” I thought.) This mechanic is also an expert on these Honda V-4 heads, having once set a speed record for correct cam chain remove and replace procedure on them. He currently owns a newer Interceptor (2003 I think). Some play in shifter linkage, but not a major issue.
Missing center stand replaced. Speedo head failed last summer, so gauge was replaced with one from a higher-mileage parts bike, and speedo drive cable replaced. This odometer now reads 53,425. Aluminum intake plenum replaced because original had broken tab where ignition coils bolt on. Wheels professionally repainted this spring.
I’ve put about 3K miles on the bike. It is now a super-reliable, immediate-start bike, and a real blast to ride. I’m selling to help finance the purchase of a sport-tourer.
I photographed all cosmetic flaws, which include chip in tank from driveway tip-over (Damn!), one fairing crack under headlight, and one break on underside (both there at time of purchase), and scratch on tail (also there at purchase). Bike stored in winter 08/09 indoors, covered and with trickle charger on battery.
Hard to overstate how much fun this bike is to zip around on. You’ll look for excuses to run errands. I commuted to work on it whenever weather allowed. Also, BE PREPARED FOR COMPLIMENTS FROM TOTAL STRANGERS. I’ve been amazed (but pleasantly surprised) at the volume of compliments from all ages, male and female on this bike. Nothing like a splash of metallic red on a sunny day to catch the eye.
Clear title, two owners manuals, new Clymer service manual and used Clymer V-4 service manual included. Contact me with other questions(allow reasonable time for reply as I’m not always online). Shipping is buyer’s responsibility, though I will assist with arrangements. Rendezvous with buyer within region can be discussed. Happy bidding.
