The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center has now made it possible to retain the authentic historic appearance of the 300SL (W 198 series) with true-to-original tires.

 

In partnership with the Dunlop Tires Germany, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center has re-introduced tires specific to the 300SL having the correct dimension of 185 VR 15 and a height-to-width aspect ratio of 82%, while featuring a modern, safe and more effective Dunlop SP Sport D8 tread.

 

To date, 300 SL owners had two tire choices: a bias-ply tire or a modern production tire.  The bias-ply tire is very limited in its road use. The modern production tire carries a lower aspect ratio (lower side wall height and wider footprint). Unfortunately this can also lead to tire-to-fender well clearance problems, along with compromising the overall look and authenticity of the vehicle. 

                                   

With the Dunlop SP Sport D8 and its exclusive classic car sizing, owners can now combine looks with safety and performance.  The tire is made of high quality materials and manufactured according to modern production methods. Its block tread pattern with a distinctive center rib transfers driving and braking forces to the road and has excellent drainage properties. The tread pattern ensures optimum tire-to-road adhesion, even on wet surfaces while touting V-rated top speed rating of up to 150 mph (240 km/h).

 

The tire has undergone extensive testing at Daimler AG’s test facilities under extreme conditions in order to be granted this speed rating and factory approval for use on the 300 SL.  And now it is available here in the U.S.
