I needed a 7/8" hole in a 1/8" steel plate. I went to both Home Depot and Lowes looking for a bit set to get the job done, but I was looking at $80-$120. I then looked at step bits from various brands, but those were still $40-$60 each. I looked on EBay for an inexpensive step bit, and this bit was the cheapest one at a little over $8 a piece. I bought two just incase. I ended up using both bits to drill out one hole, as the first one dulled out at the 1/2" mark, and not going further. I used the second bit in the same hole, and that one barely made it to 7/8", as it took me roughly 30 minutes using both bits to scrape out as much as they could to make it to the size I needed. To clarify on how I used the bits, I used a standard Dewalt battery power hand drill on its slowest setting, and I used motor oil as a lubricant to dissipate the heat. In the end, I ended up saving money still, because I do not intend to reuse these bits anyways. However, if I did intend to reuse the bits, I would have dished out the cash to get a better brand instead (i.e. Milwakee or Dewalt). I think in the long run, the better brands will equal out in terms of number of uses versus cost per use. Not to mention I'm fairly confident that the better brands will bore out the holes in a more timely fashion. I watched demonstrations and reviews of them on YouTube after the fact.
