1959 Alfa Romeo

For sale is my 1959 1/2 Giulietta Spider. I am the 4th owner of this car and have owned it for nearly 4 years. It has been remarkably trouble free during my ownership of about 2 thousand miles. I drive it 3 out of 4 weekends on local rural roads in and around North County San Diego. I purchased the car from the 3rd owner in Laguna Beach (South of L.A.) who owned the car for about 12 years. He purchased the car from a long time Alfisti from Illinois where it was cosmetically restored and mechanically freshened during the late 80's. The second owner purchased the car from it's original owner in Orange County, California. It still wears its original California gold plates from 1956. The "1/2" refers to 1959 being the transition year from the early 750 series to the later 101 series cars. This car is officially a 101 series Giulietta and has matching engine and chassis numbers. My car has the 1.3 liter twin cam 4 with the 4 speed gearbox. It was converted from a single Solex to a single Weber years ago, a common modification. And being a transition year, it came from the factory with a mix of features from both series; it has the early series hood with chrome center trim and the more desirable smaller tail lights. Alfisti will notice the fixed quarter windows in the doors, a sign of the later longer wheelbase 101 series chassis. This car is in mechanically excellent condition. The engine is strong, does not smoke and has the "rev forever" characteristic that these cars are known for. The handling is light, taut and predictable and car feels solid and tight for an open car. The synchro's are good with no "popping" out of 2nd gear or reverse. The gears shift perfectly and the clutch is in great shape. Cosmetically, I would describe this car as an excellent driver and very good show car. There are a couple of bubbles (see pics) on the hood and near one corner of the trunk - the previous owner says it was due to bad paint prep years ago and have been stable for more than a decade. There is no rust anywhere I can see and has been in dry Southern California for over 15 years. The chrome is in excellent condition and I have the chrome front bumper (2) additions and will include these. I prefered them off as I think it looks simpler. The canvas top is in great (looks new) condition but I've never used it. The first time I put the roof up was to take the pictures. The plastic window is nice and clear with no yellowing. The interior is beautiful with no tears on the seats, no cracks on the dash and door panels in excellent condition. Window cranks work as do all switches and gauges except; it needs a new gas tank sender, available from IAP for $119 and a oil sender, also available from IAP. The Becker Corona radio works but it isn't connected to any speakers -none are in the car. All tires are Pirelli's including the spare. When I purchased the car nearly 4 years ago, I replaced the fuel pump and re - cored the radiator. That's it - It's a solid, well kept and well loved Giulietta. I have tried my best to portray the car as accurately as possible and I think its in exceptional condition considering its 50 years - Good luck. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
