In the late 1960’s BMW built a small sedan which turned the struggling car company’s fortunes around. This remarkable automobile became a legend among car enthusiasts and put BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) on the road to stardom. The first model to be produced was the 1600-2, the 2 being used to designate a body style – the two door sedan. The car was an instant success. Car and Driver Magazine, the leading enthusiast magazine of the day called this BMW (the 1600 and 2002) “the best small sedans we ever drove, regardless of price.” Compared to the American Land Yachts of the era, the BMW 2002 drove and handled like a sports car, while being able to comfortably carry five passengers and their luggage. While having fun driving, these BMW’s returned up 30 mpg on the highway. World wide there were fourteen variations of this legendary sedan. The most popular coming to the United States were the 1600 and the 2002. The 2002ti being considered BMW’s ultimate incarnation of this series. The 2002 was designed by an Italian designer (Giovanni Michelotti) to add some flair to the rather Teutonic looking 4- door variant. We can thank an entrepreneur by the name of Max Hoffman for convincing BMW to bring these cars to the United States.
Our featured 2002ti is powered by a 1990 cc engine producing 120 bhp. The engine runs great as this 2002 runs easily through the gears of its 4 speed manual transmission. The BMW’s fully independent suspension gives this sedan its sports car like handling. The combination of a great engine, drive train and suspension made this automobile a delight to drive and the forerunner of many great BMW’s to come.
Our featured 2002 was the recipient of a light restoration a few years ago. The Sahara beige exterior paint is in great shape, free of any significant dings or scratches. The (smoke free) tan interior looks sharp as well, also the benefit of a light restoration. Mechanically, the engine and transmission are in good operating order as well. The BMW 2002 ti is worthy of all of the accolades which it has received throughout the years.
Our featured 1974 2002 was the last year which the car was produced and sold in the United States. The model was replaced by the legendary 3 series BMW. --As it becomes more difficult to find nice examples of the 2002 model BMW, they will most assuredly increase in value.
