I love E30s and already have a couple. My cousin knew this and gave me this 325ix. I live in Florida and she lives in Massachuesetts. My intent was to get it ready to drive to Florida, fly up with a buddy and drive it down here. I knew it would cost some bucks to fly two people to Boston, but, hey, I love E30s. I also knew that the car has some rust, a lot for a Florida car, but not much at all for a New England car.
I took the car to my buddy's shop in Boston and asked him to look it over and let me know what it needs. I expected the easy stuff, like lights not working, but when I saw the car needed a transfer case repair, I decided that for me, the car already had two strikes against it with a bit of rust and being 1200 miles from where I needed it in Florida, so I am now selling it.
The good news is the car has probably only had two owners and my cousin spent money on it like a drunken sailor. This car has had at least $10,000 spent on it in the last few years and the car comes with all the receipts. Nearly everything is new including; gas tank, tires, timing belt. The title is clear and I will send it to the buyer once the car is paid for and instruct my buddy to release it from his shop to the new owner. You are welcome to drive it, as it now runs (well) and drives. Or you can have it shipped. I don't want to get involved in that or have my buddy inconvenienced much more either.
Except for a couple of rust spots at the bottom of the fenders and a ripped driver's seat, this car is cosmetically pretty good (one of the reasons I decided to rescue it). It is black inside and Diamond Swartz outside (metallic black). The carpets are good. The dash is good. Only a couple of little dings outside.
I am at a disadvantage, as I am in Florida and the car is in Boston (where it can be viewed by anyone who would like to see it) All the receipts are still in the glove box. Not thinking I would need to look through the receipts to better sell the car, I did not bring them home.
Here is Marc's unedited, professional appraisal of the car. And by the way, if you know BMWs, Marc was Will Turner's crew chief for many years and really knows BMWs and I am the guy who owns Grassroots Motorsports magazine, and have been a BMW CCA member for 20 years. I know the whole story is a bit goofy, but it is the truth and I just want to save this E30 from the crusher and get it out of my buddy, Marc's, yard before winter sets in. This would make a very easy, nice fixer upper for someone who is mechanically inclined, or an amazing parts car, as so much of it is in such good shape. I am selling it with no reserve. I prefer to be paid with PayPal and am more interested in making this easy for everyone than making any kind of real money on this car. That and a desire to keep my good name intact, is why I am being so brutally honest and not hiding anything. As you can see, the car has a new fuel pump and battery. Since writing this, Marc tells me the shifter has loosened up enough to easily drive the car. You can call Marc and ask questions, as the car is at his place or go by and see the car. Here is Marc's appraisal:
We got it running, it needed a fuel pump and a battery, here is the rest of the list:
I cant find the transfer case guy I used in the past, I think they got out of the business
Shifter needs to be rebuilt, it has enough corrosion on it that it’s hard to move so might as well replace parts on it with short shifter.
Transfer case is removed to rebuild shifter, and transfer case is bad(4wd does not work) so you should replace the transfer case at this time. My cost on one is $1811, parts to repair cost more than that.
Rear shock mounts are blown out
Rear shocks are KYB and marginal
Left parking brake sticks
Brake lines are about to rust out(front to rear, and above subframe) that is very normal
V-belts tired, not horrible
Rear subframe bushings tired
Front control arm bushings tired
T-coolant hose underneath intake is no good and leaking
Right front strut mount is cracking
Intake boot is cracking
Throttle body needs to be removed, cleaned and lubricated as the throttle is sticking
No reverse lights
No right rear turn signal
Left rear and both right side markers don’t work
Fog lights don’t work
Hood release handle gone and latches seized, should be replaced
Right door latch needs replacement
Chassis rot is certainly not terrible, but could use some patchwork
