1984 BMW R100 Cafe Racer
You are looking at a 1984 BMW R100CR (Café Racer) that you need to see to believe! This motorcycle looks and rides just like it left the factory! It only has about 30 miles since the restoration was completed a little over a month ago (October 2009). This is one of those bikes that really needs to been seen in person to get the full effect.
This bike started its life as a 1984 BMW R100CS. The bike had 37,490 on when it was rebuilt, which as I am sure you know is nothing for a BMW. It still shows the original mileage on the odometer that currently reads 37,519. All of the work was done by Darrell Faulkenberry (our shops owner) who has been a Master certified BMW Tech and our BMW Shops owner for 25 years. On this particular bike, the engine was removed and torn down to the crank. The crankcase, cylinders, and valve covers were glass beaded and look brand new.
The crankshaft was removed, cleaned, inspected and re-installed. The pistons were cleaned and new rings were installed as there was no need to replace the pistons at 37k miles. The cylinders are made of Nikasil which is a BMW non-wearable part, and they showed no scoring or damage of any kind. The bike got a valve job with valve guides, new exhaust valves, and all the valve seats were re-cut. All seals, bolts, and gaskets were replaced on the engine. The carbs were rebuilt with new floats, diaphragms, needles, jets gaskets etc. The transmission was removed, opened, cleaned, bead blasted, inspected, and all new seals, springs, bolts, and bearings were installed. The final drive was sent to BMW of Western Oregon where the rear spline gears were re-cut and machined. All parts used on the engine, carbs, final drive, and carburator are OEM BMW items, not aftermarket stuff.
The main frame, sub frame, and engine braces were sent off to get powder coated in black. A new Original BMW tank was ordered and sent to the body shop with the front fender and side covers, where it got the beautiful red paint job. Ohlins piggyback shocks and front progressive fork springs were installed. It’s a real smooth ride, the shocks are amazing.
The exhaust is new as well. The head pipes and crossover are new OEM BMW, as is all of the hardware. The mufflers are whisper tone MAC silencers and sound great. We also replaced all control cables, rubber components, and brake lines. The seat is new as well; it’s an official German café racer seat impoted from germany. The tires are brand new Metzeler Lasertecs and the wheels were blasted and repainted as well. The front engine cover, valve covers, and starter cover were re-painted and new timing components (points, condensor) were installed and set to BMW specs. Up front we installed european control switches, new grips, short handlebars, and Bar-end mirrors.
If you are looking for a beautifully restored BMW and have always wanted to get yourself a BMW airhead, look no further. We have almost $6000 worth of parts reciepts and about 75-80 man hours into this bike. Ride this air-head to any classic European bike meet and I guarantee you’ll receive lots of positive attention! So to summarize, if it is a wear item it has been replaced, if it is a seal item it has been resealed, and if it is a paint item it has been repainted. This R100CR runs, drives, shifts, brakes, and looks better than new.
