This 1997 Bimota SB6R is a well-sorted, great running example of the marque. No it has never been crashed or damaged in spite of the battleship grey paintjob you see on the bike.
This bike belonged to a friend of mine in Seattle (Jay) from Summer of 2004 until August, 2009. Jay was the 2nd owner. A move to France was his reason for selling. He bought the bike from Prestige Imports an exotic car dealer out of North Miami Beach, Florida. The bike had 4072 miles when he bought it 5-plus years ago, so he rode the bike just over 1k miles in that time.
Since acquiring this Bimota, I have been able to contact the 1st owner and establish it's early history. He was a bike/exotic vehicle enthusiast from Florida. He bought the bike new from (now defunct) Action Sport Cycles in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The 1st owner carried out basic performance mods such as carburetor rejetting, fuel system sorting, racing exhaust, lighter rims, upgraded calipers, etc. The upgrades were performed at the original selling dealer by a technician named Chris who now operates Moto Corse Performance in Fort Lauderdale. The bike runs strong, crisp and way better than the stock SB6R I had in 1998.
So why the heck is the bike this color? Funny you should ask! Jay did not care for the solid red paint scheme as delivered from the factory. He removed all the bodywork sometime in early 2006 and handed it to a well known local Seattle bike painter to create what Jay thought would be the ultimate paintjob for his expensive piece of Asian/Italian finery. Three years later Jay finally got fed up and picked up his bodywork which had been sanded and prepped for painting but that was all. He wanted to ride so he bought many cans of grey Krylon and went to town.
You can see the results and in actuality he did a solid job but I'm guessing whoever buys this bike will want to repaint it. But no the bike does not have a crash story, damage history or other scary skeletons hiding in the closet.
Recently I had the carburetors cleaned, float valves replaced, new plugs, new fluids, int/exh valve clearances checked, etc. I also had a low charging issue diagnosed and it turned out to be a problem with the shaft that drives the alternator. I'm told this shaft is problematic on many of the Suzukis that utilized this style of engine. On those bikes of course it is no problem to yank the alternator and replace the faulty part with the new updated one from the Suzuki dealer. Naturally, on a Bimota SB6 or SB6R, one has to remove the engine from the frame to carry out the repair. So, I just had that done at the local repair shop that I use and she charges just fine now.
The bike does have the full Corse Racing Technologies exhaust system. Evidently this company is "The BIMOTA Specialist". I know this because they print that exact phrase right on their logo/emblem and then affix one to each muffler in plain view. Anyway, this particular system has a ceramic coating on the header pipes from a local outfit called Performance Coatings and the pipes are wrapped with header tape as well.
Other upgrades are billet GP-style Brembo front calipers and lightweight Dymag wheels. The Michelin tires have almost no wear on them. The turn signals have been replaced with smaller, LED style units. Jay also had a small extension milled out of aluminum to make the kickstand longer as he did not like how far the bike leaned over when parked. Also the bike has a steering damper that I'm fairly certain it did not come with.
The stock mirrors are lost but included is a set of nla Ducati Performance billet mirrors that sold for stupid $$$ back in the day from what I remember. I find them to be not very attractive but they do come with the bike. I think any mirror for a 748/916/996/998 will bolt right up. Ebay item # 110448613427 is a new set of mirrors just like the ones that are included with this bike.
Also included are all the manuals that came with the bike when new. Some service history and other receipts. Both factory keys. A 1999 Bimota full-line US sales brochure. Jay sourced all kinds of factory decals in anticipation of his whiz-bang paintjob that, sadly, never transpired. You get those decals and a factory service manual in a 3-ring binder.
In short this a very nice, lightly modded SB6R with good ownership history. It runs/operates quite well. Other than the, umm... interesting color, the bike is cosmetically mint and very clean. If you like bomb-can grey or are ok with the fact that the bike needs a repaint you will be happy with this Bimota.
