PRODUCT FEATURES

Magnaflow Car Sound Quality
Compare Magnaflow's Car Sound catalytic converters with any other manufacturer and youll see why it has become a leader in the manufacturing of exhaust components. Others may employ one or two of the following features, but only Car Sound puts them all together to create a catalytic converter that exceeds basic need and function. Our years of research and development have resulted in many unique features that are exclusive to Car Sound. We combine efficient manufacturing techniques and state-of-the-art industrial design to produce an end process and product that sets, rather than meets, the highest standards of product performance and efficiency in the industry.
- Ribbed body that minimizes expansion and distortion when the converter heats up. The ribs form a channel that protects the cushioning mat from direct exposure to exhaust gasses and they hold the ceramic catalyst in proper alignment.
- 1/2 lap-joint where the necks meet the body. The neck does not extend into the converter body where it could hamper exhaust flow. This is the strongest and smoothest flowing inlet/outlet joint of any manufacturer.
- Separate dies on different sized inlets.
- Monolithic honeycomb catalyst. The ceramic is designed for maximum flow and surface area.
- Heavier gauge stainless steel, tip to tip. Others use mixed weights and materials.
- Seam weldedclose to the converter body for a strong, tight bond.We dont weld along the edge which could allow the converter to expand like the folds in an accordion, allowing the catalyst to move around.
- Installed is a factory capped, 90 degree air tube on with air converters. This saves time during installation. There is no need for additional labor to weld on an air tube or to create a bend when only an air tube stub is provided.
- Aluminized or stainless OEM-style ribbed heat shield that creates a rigid wall of protection against heat and adds to the structural stability of the converter.
Clean Parts
Car Sound de-greases and washes all fabricated components after assembly. The new converter is clean of metal dust and fragments. Every converter comes out of the box clean. This is almost an exclusive feature of Car Sound.
Resealable Boxes
Car Sounds converter boxes are made of a heavy gauge corrugated board that is three layers thick at the ends to protect the converters during shipment. The boxes are easily opened and re-closed, keeping the customers inventory looking better, longer. Known throughout the industry as the pizza box, it is yet another example of how we set ourselves apart from competitors.
WHAT IS OBDII?
OBDII stands for Second Generation "On Board Diagnostics". The system is incorporated into the computers of all new vehicles from 1996 on, that weigh less than 14,000 lbs. This includes passenger cars, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles. The OBDII system monitors virtually every fuel & emission related component on the vehicle that can affect the emission performance. This ensures that the vehicle remains environmentally friendly over the entire life of the vehicle and assists repair technicians when diagnosing emission related problems. If a problem is detected, the OBDII system illuminates a warning light on the instrument panel to let the driver know that there is a malfunction and that service is required to fix the problem. The OBDII system stores the information so the technician can accurately find and fix the problem.
OBDII AFTERMARKET CONVERTER REPLACEMENT POLICY
Late model (generally 1996 and later) cars and trucks have On-Board Diagnostic (OBDII) systems designed to detect catalyst failures. These vehicles often use two or more catalytic converters and have oxygen sensors in front and behind one or more of the converters. In nearly all cases, these sensors are located in the exhaust pipe. The vehicle's on-board computer compares the oxygen sensor signals before and after the converter(s) to determine if the converter is working correctly.
EPA NATIONAL
Outside California, traditional aftermarket converters may be used on OBDII vehicles as long as the following guidelines are followed:
- The original converter is defective as shown by emission tests, the OBDII system or the converter is physically damaged, and the converter is no longer covered by the OEM vehicle warranty.
- The aftermarket converter is selected based on the vehicle weight, engine size, and physical fit.
- The location of the oxygen sensor(s) must be the same as in the OEM exhaust system and CANNOT be relocated.
- After hanging the converter, the diagnostic codes should be cleared according to the vehicle manufacturer's procedure, otherwise the on-board computer may immediately turn on the Check Engine Light.
- Aftermarket catalytic warranty terms and conditions remain unchanged as stated on the warranty certificate.
CONVERTER FAILURES
 |
Engine Tune-Up Required. A number of problems could occur to the catalytic converter as the result of an engine that is out of tune. Any time an engine is operating outside proper specifications, unnecessary wear and damage may be caused to the catalytic converter as well as the engine itself. The damage is often the result of an incorrect air/fuel mixture, incorrect timing, or misfiring spark plugs. Any of these conditions could lead to catalytic converter failure or worse. |
 |
Excess Fuel Entering Exhaust. The fuel that powers your vehicle is meant to burn in the combustion chamber only. Any fuel that leaves the combustion chamber unburned will enter the exhaust system and light-off when it reaches the catalytic converter. This can super-heat the converter far above normal operating conditions and cause a meltdown. Possible causes are an incorrect fuel mixture, incorrect timing, corroded spark plugs, a faulty oxygen sensor, sticking float, faulty fuel injector or a malfunctioning check valve. |
 |
Oil or Antifreeze Entering Exhaust. Oil or antifreeze entering the exhaust system can block the air passages by creating a heavy carbon soot that coats the ceramic catalyst. These heavy carbon deposits create two problems. First, the carbon deposits prevent the catalytic converter from reducing harmful emission in the exhaust flow. And second, the carbon deposits clog the pores in the ceramic catalyst and block exhaust flow, increasing backpressure and causing heat and exhaust to back up into the engine compartment. Your engine may actually draw burnt exhaust gasses back into the combustion chamber and dilute the efficiency of the next burn cycle. The result is a loss of power and overheated engine components. Possible causes are worn piston rings, faulty valve seals, failed gaskets or warped engine components. |
 |
Deteriorated Spark Plug or Spark Plug Wires. Spark plugs that dont fire, or misfire, cause unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system. The unburned fuel ignites inside the converter and could result in a partial or complete meltdown of the ceramic catalyst. Spark plugs and spark plug wires should be checked regularly and replaced if damaged or if wires are worn or cracked. |
 |
Oxygen Sensor Not Functioning Properly. An oxygen sensor failure can lead to incorrect readings of exhaust gasses. The faulty sensor can cause a too rich or too lean condition. Too rich and the catalyst can meltdown. Too lean and the converter is unable to convert the hydrocarbons into safe elements and may not pass a state inspection. |
 |
Road Damage or Broken Hangers. The catalyst inside a catalytic converter is made from a lightweight, thin-walled ceramic. It is protected by a dense insulating mat. This mat holds the catalyst in place and provides moderate protection against damage. However, rock or road debris striking the converter, or improper or broken exhaust system support can cause a Catalyst Fracture. Once the ceramic catalyst is fractured, the broken pieces become loose and rattle around and break up into smaller pieces. Flow is interrupted and backpressure in the exhaust system increases. This leads to heat build-up and loss of power. Possible causes of a catalyst fracture are road debris striking the converter, loose or broken hangers, potholes or off-road driving. |
