This engine has less than 500 miles on it, and starts with the first turn of the ignition. The motor is a mildly built 388 cubic inch “stroked” small block Chevy with a long list of very new and high quality components. The short block and valve train were built and installed by Ezell Racing. It makes plenty of power, but is still a very dependable motor and can be driven as far as you’d like to go. It has the period-correct Powerglide two-speed transmission with a high end BTE converter. It rides around town very nicely – but will boil the rear tires if you mash the gas! The interior is 98% restored and looks excellent. It has new seats, new door liners, new headliner, good carpet, and almost all of the little “knick-knacks” have been addressed. Note: This car did not come with seat belts until 1967 - so it has none. You can order some from Year One or Jegs and install if you wish. The car handles well. It has great acceleration, but also has solid stopping power with the Wilwood front disc brake conversion. The suspension is good and the car is fun to drive. The rear axle and chunk are original (from what I can tell) – and could stand to be upgraded to a posi or limited slip 4.xx gear set to put the torque converter to work and minimize rear wheel spin. I’ve left the 3.80’s in it to make it more highway friendly. This is a GREAT car to own and drive – it just needs a home and caring owner! I have over $21k in the car - and the reserve is nowhere near that.. This is a very good deal. This is the third motor I've had in the car - it's very right and sounds great!
At this time only known issues are: 1) Needs new fan shroud - I put new higher efficiency radiator in recently and need shroud 2) Needs water neck gasket - $2.00 part 3) Needs driver side valve cover gasket 4) Passenger side wheel bearing needs to be replaced - unless I've changed out rear end already... 5) Ding on lower part of passenger side door (paint chipped) - unloading from car trailer 6) Needs new windshield wiper knob - I replaced actuator with brand new one (year correct) and old knob was for '67 7) Small spot of sun-fade on middle of front carpet that just needs quick re-dye (I have the dye I think)
That's it! This great piece of American classic automobile history is yours for the taking! And unless you're ready to spend $35,000 - don't be fooled by all those fake 'SS 396' (clone?) ads in here... there are so many people 'cloning' them that they're not even unique anymore. Plus, this motor is WAY better than the real 396... for WAY less money. This car is built to be driven and enjoyed.
