Description Written by Owner!
Body & Paint:
This car has undergone a complete frame off restoration. The process has been fully documented with over 200 photos documenting every step of restoration from the time the car
was purchased in 1982 to the present. A CD has been made telling the complete story in pictures as well. Where new parts were needed they were purchased from Corvette Central
under their restoration program. All receipts are also available. The FRAME OFF restoration started with complete disassembly, blasting the frame, body (inside and out
including engine compartment, driver compartment, top storage compartment and trunk) with baking soda to remove all old paint and any rust that had accumulated. The body was
sanded, any cracks or tears in fiberglass repaired, cleaned, sanded and smoothed. Soda blasting revealed that the left front fender had been replaced in the past.
The frame was given 2 coats of POR15 Epoxy paint. The fiberglass body, after sanding, filling and smoothing was Sealed with 2 coats of STANDOX polyester sealer. Two coats of
high build primer was then applied to the body, block sanded and filled three times to provide a smooth surface. Prior to painting a seal coat was applied over the primer.
Painting consisted of 3 coats of PRO SPRAY BRAND single stage Urethane "Roman Red" with "Ermine White" inserts or coves (RPO 518B). After painting, paint was block wet sanded
with following grits for smoothness (400, 800, 1200, 2000, 3600 then 600 for adhesion) followed by 2 coats of clear coat sanded to 2800 grit. Under body was painted with
black gloss DuPont DUP MIXJQ 99J-QT.
The engine was painted with 5 coats of GM Orange epoxy paint and the transmission was given 2 coats of silver paint prior to being remounted in frame. Engine, transmission and
drive shaft were mounted in prior to body being remounted. Body was mounted on frame prior to painting final colors. Doors, hood, trunk, top cover and dash parts were painted
off the car and mounted after painting allowing door jams, top storage interior area and trunk to be painted with the body.
The removable hardtop was processed (stripped, sealed, primed, sanded and painted) at same time rest of body was processed. The windshield was replaced in 1998 at the time when
initial interior and mechanical restoration took place. The original windshield was sand pitted and unable to be restored. The windshield was removed and the frame was
rechromed and upgraded with the 2006/07 restoration.
During restoration doors, hood, trunk, convertible top cover and dash board were all removed to allow correct painting of all parts including door jams, glove box and trunk and
top storage area inner areas. Both doors are aligned and close with ease as does the trunk and hood with correct spacing. In the process of reassembling the car a few paint
blemishes occurred in mounting the hood (at left rear corner in front of drive), left lower front of drivers door where white, red and trim intersect and trunk lid just above
license plate. Since single stage paint was used these are easily repairable. After painting was completed the entire car was buffed out in a three stage series using the
Presta Ultra Buffing System consisting of Stage 1 Ultra Cutting Crème which is 1200 Grit equivalent, followed by Stage 2 Swirl Remover and then Stage 3 1500 Polish all
mechanically applied. The result has been a show car finish which has won many awards at car shows around the Midwest.
Hardtop - Convertible Top:
The hardtop was restored along with the car in 2006-07. As far as is known, everything on the top is original. No windows were replaced but all were polished out. There are a
few very minor stains in the rear window and on the side windows. Stainless steel trim was polished out. Weather stripping over the windshield was replaced but none of the
other was replaced. The hardtop has rarely been on the car since the car is never driven from November to April and has always been stored hanging in the garage over the car
stall. The new white convertible top was purchased from Al Knoch Interiors (replica of original) and installed over a completely reconditioned convertible top frame.
Chrome & Trim:
As far as can be determined all chrome is original. All chrome was re-chromed at the time of the restoration. In addition the valve covers, hood hinge points, hood latches and
receivers, front engine mount and trunk latch, windshield side posts and door window posts were also chromed at the same time. (These added details give the engine compartment
a show car quality while maintaining originality) Much of the trim parts are new including the body side insert moldings, fender top moldings, side spears. Anything that was
not re-chromed or purchased new were buffed to show quality before installation. Receipts for all of the above are available.
Interior:
The red interior is totally correct. An Al Knoch interior was installed when the interior was restored in 1998. Seats were rebuilt with new correct springs and seat coverings
and are in like new condition. A new padded dash and dash insert were installed. Carpet was new at that time and has some sun fading in the tunnel area. All knobs, gauges,
clock, radio (Wonderbar), tachometer, courtesy light, steering wheel, directional lever, shift lever and ash tray are correct and function properly. The interior includes a
package tray and seat belts. Door panels, door handles, arm rests and kick panels are correct and in good condition. Steering wheel is correct and the horn, dash lights,
dimmer switch all work. Wiring harness under the dash was new at restoration. Floor mats have the Corvette emblem embroidered in them. There will be no disappointment with the
interior appearance.
Engine Compartment:
The engine compartment is fully detailed. The engine compartment was painted prior to body being mounted on the chassis with black DuPont MIXJQ 99J-QT. Under hood accessories
such as wiper motor were taped off. The wiper motor had been shine sanded to original aluminum color. All wiring was installed after all painting was completed with new wiring
harness. Prior to installation the engine was detailed with 5 coats of GM Epoxy orange. The clutch housing and transmission case were covered with two coats of aluminum paint.
The valve covers have been chromed and all exposed bolt heads are chrome with a Chevy "Bowtie" on top. The front engine mount has also been chromed and the frame brackets
powder coated with a silver chrome paint.
The original engine S/N 109025 F0607CS was missing when the car was resurrected. (See History link above story.) The engine that is currently in the car is an original 1960
Corvette engine S/N 104394 F0208CT with correct numbers and dates. The engine was rebuilt by a race car engine builder. The rebuild included hardened valves and valve seat
inserts to allow use of unleaded gas. The engine has approximately 14,000 miles since the rebuild, does not use any oil and still currently operates at over 60 psi oil pressure
(oil pressure gauge only goes to 60 psi). Block casting 3756519 dated E209 (May 20, 1959). Head casting numbers are 3774692 dates (left A180 ie Jan 18, 1960, right B40 ie. Feb
4, 1960) Intake manifold (P/N 3739653) is correct and was removed and powder coated. And carburetors (2 correct Carter WCFB’s 2626S and 2627S, carburetor tags are missing) were
removed, reconditioned and painted the correct color. The generator is correct (P/N 1102043) and has the tachometer drive. The distributor is dual point (correct), however the
dual points have been replaced by an “Ignitor” electronic point system and the coil is 40,000 volt “Ignitor”. Dual point system is available to buyer if they want to return to
original. The “Ignitor” system is inside the existing distributor case and is not visible to the casual observer. The ignition system is protected by polished stainless steel
shielding. Exhaust manifolds are correct P/N 3750556 (right) and 3749965 (left). Casting dates are illegible.
Other features of note under the hood area follows. The single reservoir brake master cylinder has been replaced by a dual reservoir master cylinder with split front and rear
controlled through a modulating valve. The brake system includes front disc brakes replacing the original drum brakes (for safety purposes) and drum rear brakes. The serial
number plate on the steering column has been registered by the OHIO State Highway Patrol. The car, when originally purchased by the present owner, has the car serial number
stamped on the steering column and was not very legible. Apparently sometime in the cars earlier life the serial number plate on the steering column was removed. When the
frame off restoration was done the current owner wanted to have the serial number plate restored and requested such from the OSHP who reviewed the cars history, checked the S/N
on the frame and issued a new valid plate.
The aluminum radiator is the original 290hp version with a separate aluminum top tank, part of the verification that this was an original fuel injected 290hp car. The mounting
holes for the FI air cleaner are still visible on the left side under hood body. The fan cowl and fan have also been silver chrome powder coat painted. Hood latches and hood
rise strut are also chromed. The engine compartment detail is stunning for show, yet very functional. Water hoses are correct but hose clamps are not. Oil filter housing
is correct (filler element type).
Glass:
The windshield was replaced in 1998 when the interior was restored due to pitting and wiper marks on the old windshield that were not repairable. The windshield is tinted but
does not have the correct date coding. As far as is known the side windows are original and roll up and down with ease.
Wheels & Tires:
Wheel Rims are Buick Skylark Style Wire same as Kelsey Hayes original. These chrome wheels were available as a dealer installed option for GM rear wheel drive cars from the mid
1950’s to early 1970’s. They are capped by three prong spinners with the word “Corvette” on a red background. Rims will accept 1960 Corvette hubcaps when spinner is removed if
owner desires factory look. These unique wheels set the car apart from all other solid axle Corvettes and are a show stopper. Tires are Coker Classic Polysteel radial
P205/75R15 with 2-3/8 wide white sidewalls. The tire size is the radial match for the standard 670-15 originally used on the car. Tires were new in 2000 and have about 8000
miles on them. There is a white wall spare tire in the trunk as well as an original scissor/screw jack.
Frame & Undercarriage:
During the frame off restoration the frame and suspension were completely stripped to bare metal by baking soda blast. (See Restoration Photos) The frame was immediately
cleaned, sanded and painted with POR15 Epoxy and two coats of under frame black semi-gloss black paint. Suspension parts were processed likewise. The heavy duty 10 coil front
springs were replaced with softer, correct 7 coil springs to give a softer ride. All bushings on the suspension, sway bars and linkage were replaced with new, including tie rod
ends. Wheel bearings were replaced. Frame alignment was checked at a frame shop and found to be within specifications. As stated earlier front drum brakes have been replaced
with non power assisted disc brakes. Alignment has been done by an expert on classic car alignment. The exhaust system is new using FlowMaster Series 40 mufflers to give a
mellow sound and exits through the openings in the rear bumpers. Nine times out of ten, people selling a car would not talk about or take any photos of the underside.
The undercarriage tells you a lot about the car, that is why we took a few pictures of the bottom.
Mechanical:
Engine/Transmission/Rear End:
The transmission is a 4 speed Borg Warner T10 and is not original to the car. The transmission was purchased rebuilt and mounted to the engine at the time the current rebuilt
engine was installed in the car in 1998. A Hurst replica 4 speed short throw shifter is used and has the replica reverse lock out pull handle on the shift lever. Shift cover
plate with ash tray and shift pattern are installed. The clutch, aluminum clutch housing, and clutch linkage are all correct.
The rear axle is original. The axle ratio is 3.36:1 and is not posi-traction. This makes the car very driveable registering 3000 engine RPM at 70 mph. Rear brakes are
original drum type and the emergency brake works.
Additional Information:
This car is a real stunner that will make its owner proud to drive it. This car has won numerous trophies at car shows throughout the Midwest. The car is driven approximately
1000 miles per year to various shows and cruise ins where its stunning appearance is always a hit. It has been to the Bloomington Gold show (though not for judging), Fathers
Day show in Hastings Michigan, Grand Rapids (MI) 28th street cruise, Woodward Cruise (Detroit), Bob McDorman show in Columbus, Somerset, KY “Somernites Cruise”, MidAmerica
Motorworks cruise in and others to numerous to mention. The car was appraised for insurance purposes at a value of $60,000 to $70,000 in 2007 (appraisal copy available).
