Documented, Numbers Matching 1968 Dodge Dart GTS!

Looking to step up to some legit Mopar muscle but can't quite swing the price on a Charger R/T or Coronet R/T? Fear not—you can still easily become a full-fledged member of the Scat Pack, since Dodge also offered a budget-friendly third member of the Pack: the Dart GTS.
This yellow '68 Dart GTS is one cool little car. The stripes on the flanks of Mopars of the era, including the Dart GTS, are nicknamed "bumblebee" stripes, and nothing makes that nickname more appropriate than black stripes on a yellow car. The black vinyl top looks sharp contrasting with the yellow paint, and matches the black S6X bucket seat interior. Add in cool details like the deluxe wheel covers and hood inserts that resemble exhaust ports or something, and this Dart really pops.

Largely overlooked during the very height of the muscle car wars, the Dodge Dart GTS was definitely not a car you wanted to overlook at the stoplight drags, no matter what you were driving. Smaller and lighter than some of their famous big brothers, they could nevertheless run with some pretty serious hardware. Even when equipped with the standard 340 cubic-inch 4-barrel V8 as this '68 GTS is, they were legitimate 14-second cars. Hell, when they were new, they were strong competitors in the Super Stock classes and some of those cars are still setting records today.

The GTS was the bad boy of the Dart family. It offered a standard 340 with the optional 383 and both were available with a revised Hurst 4-speed manual. The GTS also featured Rallye suspension, heavier shocks, dual chrome exhaust tips, and E70x14 tires as standard equipment. And just in case nobody noticed the rumbling engine note, there were bright red GTS badges on the hood, trunk and fenders. All 1968 Darts got the cool round parking lights in the front grille and round marker lights on the sides. Out back, the taillights are a 1968-only 3-element design.

Chrysler introduced an all-new, high-winding 340 cubic inch small block in '68, and made it standard in the Dart GTS. Featuring high compression, an aggressive cam, 2.02 / 1.60 valve heads, dual plane intake, and free flowing exhaust manifolds, these motors were conservatively rated at 275hp. In a light weight car such as the Dart this made for a wonderful combination of power and handling. However, production was not limited to just the 340 motor. Buyers could choose a 383 big block as an option, although at the expense of some handling as the enormous weight of the big block did not suit the car well in the turns.

You're in luck with this particular GTS, too—it has its original broadcast sheet. Some highlights include:

52 340 4-barrel engine
395 Torqueflight transmission
404 3.23:1 final gear ratio
421 AM radio trans. audio
486 Console
521 Tinted glass
564 Bucket seats
624 HD suspension with sway bar
577 Tachometer
638 Heavy duty firm ride shocks
581 15-inch deluxe wheel covers

This particular GTS was the recipient of a high-quality restoration and has been used gently and sparingly since completion. Underhood, it's still fresh and clean, showing signs of an accurate restoration and meticulous care ever since. The engine still shines in its Hemi Orange paint, and it still sports its unique driver-side exhaust manifold that is angled up to clear the steering box assembly. There's even an authentic-appearing reproduction battery. This is definitely an engine compartment you'll be proud to show off at the local cruise night.

Underneath, it's no trailer queen, but a very high quality driver. Where's the fun in having a sleeper that only sleeps? This little car doesn't want to be static art anyway—it wants to run. The body was obviously a bare shell when the undercoating was applied, and it was carefully masked to give a crisp look. Only after that were the suspension and drivetrain installed, contrasting nicely against the satin black finish and giving it all a very detailed look. The wheelwells are still body color as the factory did it, and the paint in there is still flawless. Clearly someone spent a lot of time keeping this car detailed and sharp.

The stainless trim, from the sill moldings to the reveal moldings, is all in excellent, highly polished condition. Both bumpers have been re-chromed, working with a new set of door handles, new badges and a new outside rear view mirror to add flash. The yellow paint shows beautifully and the wrinkle-free vinyl top looks like it could have been installed last week. Inside, the bare-bones Dart interior is beautifully dressed in black, with a little jewelry like the center console with a rare factory tach mounted ahead of the shifter for the TorqueFlite transmission.

Paperwork includes that aforementioned broadcast sheet, the original warranty booklet, and the original owner's manual. We've also got the metal Certicard issued on 3-28-68, which was like Chrysler's version of the Protect-O-Plate that dealers could run through a machine like a credit card to imprint the car and owner data on the service forms. That was the idea, anyway, and it's kind of cool to see one intact today with the original owner's name still on it.

In 1968, a total of 8,295 GTS coupes and hardtops were built making this a fairly rare car. The GTS wasn't just for people on a budget, but also for people who know what a real street weapon should look like. While a lot of folks just look for sheer cubic inches, a high-winding small block in a lightweight car can make for some embarrassing moments for those heavy-hitters. And speaking of heavy hitters, the Dart GTS is starting to gain some momentum with collectors, too. No, it's not a Hemi, and that's why you can still afford this one without raiding your kids' college fund. And with one in this condition, you can take it out to the stoplight grand prix and show the big guys what power-to-weight-ratio really means. Put on your best Scat Pack T-shirt and give us a call today!

About this auction & Best of Show Automotive

Convinced that collector car values are plummeting? Don't be fooled! While the value of mediocre cars has been steadily sliding with the economy over the past two years, the value of incredible cars has stayed level and, is rising. In times of economic uncertainty, capital flows to the highest quality assets which contain the least amount of risk and the classic car market is no exception. The lesson is simple: buy the very best you can find!

Please note that all sales are binding and final. Our cars are sold "as-is" with no warranty expressed or implied. Please carefully read the terms & conditions of the sale before bidding. Winning this auction does not entitle you to come inspect the car and decide if you want to buy it, but obligates you to complete the purchase! A $1000.00 deposit via PayPal is due within 24 hours of the auction close ... NO EXCEPTIONS.

We do not release our reserve prices, as this would be unfair to the other bidders, so please don't ask!

Note that our cars are on display in our showroom in Mentor, Ohio, in national print advertisements, listed for sale on our website, and listed for sale in multiple, nationally known, online dealer showrooms at all times. Since our cars are for sale in a number of other mediums, we reserve the right to cancel the auction at any time.

Best of Show Automotive sells approximately 40 cars each and every month to collectors worldwide. Each and every one of these cars is listed on Ebay, but only one sale, on average per month, actually occurs on Ebay. Accordingly, if you see a car you like, don't wait! Call us! When you see it disappear, it means that it sold to someone who saw it somewhere else. Lastly, note that we do not change our pricing on any car based on Ebay auction activity. Ebay is a wholesale marketing platform, which we use primarily for marketing purposes.

If you have ZERO feedback on Ebay, please call or email us to request our authority to bid on our vehicles. And, for you con-men and women out there, while you may think it's cute to create a user account and click the Buy It Now on a high dollar car you can't afford, note that we will track you down and we will recoup our costs for fraudulent bidding activity.

This car can be inspected at our 60,000 square foot office complex and showroom facility, operated as the Mentor Museum of Speed, located at 7700 Tyler Boulevard, in Mentor, Ohio, six days per week. Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm daily, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 4 pm Saturdays. You may stop in at any time during museum hours to view our collection. For those of you who need to fly in, we can provide transportation to and from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. We can also provide accommodations within walking distance of our facility.

If you would like us to review a trade, please send detailed pictures of the entire car, including the underside. Also send a detailed description which includes all specifications, facts, figures, history and documentation present with the car.
