Interview with Edgar Schmued
Designer of the P-51 Mustang

During World War II, the Mustang destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in Europe, making it the highest scoring US fighter. Due to its great versatility it was used as a bomber escort, a dive bomber, for ground attack, photorecon missions, interceptor, trainer, transport, and is used today as a high performance racer.

The man responsible for this remarkable airplane was Edgar Schmued, who began his prolific career in aircraft design in 1930 after immigrating to the United States from Germany. His designs have included not only the P-51, but also the Navion, the F-82, the F-86 Sabre Jet, and the F-100 Super Sabre. But it is the Mustang of which he is most proud; it was his first major project.

This interview was recorded in 1984 at Mr. Schmued's Oceanside, California, home; He died in June of 1985.
