Description (revised)
Vehicle Description

Here we have a very rare 1998 all electric Ford Ranger.  This is not a DIY conversion.  Ford built these electric trucks from 1998-2002 to meet California’s EV laws.  Ford produced about 1500 of these trucks but only about 400 are known to survive making this a collectable piece of automotive history.

The tuck is equipped with

  • Ford Ranger four wheel drive chassis
  • Power steering
  • Heat and air conditioning
  • Power ABS breaks
  • Air bags
  • 39, 8 volt lead acid batteries providing 18 kWh and weighing 2000 pounds
  • A 90 Hp three phase electric traction motor with surprisingly good acceleration for the vehicle weight
  • Single speed 3:1 gearbox, no transmission.
  • Rear wheel drive
  • Water cooled power electronics
  • Regenerative breaking
  • Rear suspension consisting of a De Dion tube, a Watts linkage, and carbon fiber leaf springs

Top speed is governed 75 mph.  The faster you go the less range it will have.

The batteries have 18 kW hours of energy storage.  For example if the charging efficiency is 70 % and with my electrical rate of $.052 per kW hour it would cost only $1.21 in electricity to fully charge the batteries.  Batteries take about 8 hours to charge.

This truck was originally a security vehicle for a power plant in Georgia.  I bought the vehicle from a guy in North Carolina.  He used it as a commuter car and had a rebuilt pack put in it shortly before I bough it.  He told me the pack had about 300 miles on it when I bought it.   I have own this for one year and also used it as a commuter car during the pleasant summer months.  It was in heated storage during the winter.  There are approximately 1,200 miles on this battery pack.

Most of the original battery packs lasted 7-10,000 miles so this truck at 30,186 has had a few battery packs put in it over the years.  The electric company must have really liked this truck to go through the expense of additional battery packs.

Because of the age, mileage, and the fact that it was a fleet vehicle the exterior has seen its share of bumps and bruises.  The front driver’s side fender has a small dent near the Ranger emblem and the bed has some scratches and dings inside and out.  The roof has a rust ring where a magnetic flashing light sat for years.  A little paint or even a new bed from a junk yard would fix it up nicely.  The interior is not bad.  The arm rest works but there is a crack in the top from someone leaning on it too hard.  The trim bezel around the radio has a hole where there was a switch that operated the light on the roof.  The clear coat on the wheels is crackling.  Probably could be striped and re painted.

I live in a small hilly town in PA.  Most of the roads have a speed limit of 35 MPH or less, yes I said or LESS.  For the most part this has been a reliable car for me and my 3 mile commute to work or the grocery store.  My range varies from 30-40 miles on a charge.  Right now it’s closer to 30.  The best the lead acid battery Ranges ever got when new was 40-45 miles on a charge.

I have had a few faults show up every once and a while.  The first one (from what I read) is not that unusual and is more of a nuisance then a problem.  Occasionally during regenerative breaking the regen is temporarily turned off and the break light illuminates on the dash.  This is usually because too much current is being dumped in to the batteries and they may be too hot or too cold or some other reason.  The regen usually returns with in 10 seconds or so.  The other fault is some what of a mystery to me.  Usually after a steep downhill road or after being parked (in drive) at a very long light or a drive through the power limit light comes on.  You have to pull over, turn off the car and restart it.  Then everything is fine.  Both of these faults would show up only once or twice a month.   I just want to let you know that there are a few gremlins here that may be able to be worked out or just lived with.

The truck has new Continental P225/70R15 tires, new Monroe Sensatrac shocks, and new front lower ball joints.  It has a spare tire on a matching rim.  I will include one power conditioning station (PCS) charger interface.  This operates on 240 VAC that will have to be wired to your electrical panel or a break out box.  I will include a pdf file of the shop manual and other related documents.

This truck operates on high voltage (312 VDC nominal).  This can be VERY dangerous so the owner is responsible for this or her own safety when working on the truck.  Driving it is completely safe but be cognizant of any wires in orange loom as they are high voltage.  I would recommend the owner be very mechanically inclined and technology savvy.  This tuck isn’t suited for the average person.  The truck does not come with any warrantee either expressed or implied and is sold as is.  I have done my best to describe the condition.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Most parts including rebuilt battery packs are available through Blue Sky Motors Inc in California.

If you have less then 20 feedbacks or a negative feedback with in the past 6 months you must contact me first before bidding.  I will not disclose my reserve so please don’t ask.  I have seen nonworking EV Ranges sell for more then my reserve on this working truck.  I have two of these vehicles and am selling this one to fund the restoration of another.  Let me know if you have any questions.
