This Ford Ranger EV is an original Electric Vehicle (EV) built by Ford Motor Company at its Edison, New Jersey plant.  This is not a hybrid, conversion vehicle or early prototype built by TDM.  There were 1,500 Ranger EVs originally produced by Ford and this is one of approximately 400 vehicles that remain in existence, making them a future collector's item.

This vehicle is an original Ford built Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) vehicle (very Rare) as there were only a limited number of them built using this advanced battery chemistry.  The vehicles were leased to customers for a period of 3 years and then returned to Ford.  After the lease was complete, the batteries were removed and stored / maintained in a climate controlled area.  A limited number of vehicles are now available for purchase to the public.  The vehicles most likely do not include their original batteries that came with vehicle; however, original mileage on the lease returns were very low (ranging between 6,000 miles and 16,000 miles for the majority of vehicles).  All packs have been screened and tested by battery experts (Battery M.D., Inc.) and have been brought back to meet near original vehicle / battery specifications.  In several cases, pack reconditioning is able to yield higher that rated battery specifications.

This vehicle has been fully inspected (using a 95+ point inspection test) and refurbished by Blue Sky Motors, Inc. to be fully functioning and meeting original manufacturer's specifications (except where noted).  Blue Sky Motors' 95+ point inspection tests include but are not limited to the repair and inspection of vehicle fluids, brakes, tires, heat / air conditioning systems.  Many items have been fully replaced or repaired.  Blue Sky Motors is a Ford Authorized Ranger EV services facility and has been selected by Ford to refurbish and sell these vehicles back to customers.  Below lists the specifics of this vehicle:

Battery Type:  NiMH (25 each 12-V Panasonic NiMH batteries for 312V nominal pack voltage).

*Note:  These are the exact same batteries that Toyota uses in their RAV4-EV.  The Panasonic NiMH batteries are known for their long life with very little need for repairs (per independent tests by Southern California Edison, claiming > 100,000 miles life).  Used Toyota RAV4-EVs are presently selling for over $50,000 on Ebay.

Range:  Vehicle demonstrates an estimated 65 mile range (combination of freeway and city driving - test driven by a non-EV driver). 

*Note:  Distance to Empty (DTE) gage is not always accurate if the battery pack is not healthy and balanced.  Final range of this vehicle was proven with an actual test drive.  Health and balance of pack was validated using State-of-the-Art battery test equipment (that even OEM EV dealerships do not have).

Drive System:  AC Induction Motor (90 HP) with single speed reduction differential, all located on the rear axle.

Terms and Conditions:

This vehicle is sold "As-Is" and "No Warranty" will be provided either expressed or implied by Ford Motor Company or Blue Sky Motors.  Although there are many parts available for this vehicle, due to the vehicle's uniqueness and limited production (1998 - 2001), parts are limited and as such neither Ford nor Blue Sky Motors will be responsible for supplying parts after they become obsolete.

Upon successful completion of the auction, winners will need to provide a $1,000 non-refundable deposit via PayPal within 48 hours of auction close or the vehicle will be re-listed.  After the completion of the auction, Blue Sky Motors (a licensed vehicle dealer) will FedEx a sales package.  Successful bidders are responsible for paying auction price (listed above) as well as all applicable sales tax (for CA residents), license / registration fees ($295.00 for CA residents) and a documentation fee of $55.00.  The FedEx sales package will include the final price and detailed cost breakdown showing applicable tax and licensing fees.  The sales agreement contract must be signed and returned along with a Cashiers Check, Certified Check or Money Order payable to "Blue Sky Motors, Inc." for the remainder of the balance within 10 business days of completion of the auction or the deposit will be retained and the vehicle will be re-listed.  Credit Cards are not accepted and seller financing is not available. 

Note:  These vehicles are not listed in Kelly Blue Book and as a result, if you do obtain your own financing, additional assets will be required (besides the vehicle) to secure the financing.

Blue Sky Motors can provide a quotation for vehicle transportation for anywhere in the United States.  No international sales will be permitted.  After the final check has cleared and the completed sales contract has been received, the auction winner will have 10 business days to remove the vehicle.  Any vehicle that remains on the property after the 10 day grace period will be assessed $20/day for storage.

Things to know before purchasing one of these vehicles.

Does this include the off-board charger (Power Conditioning Station, PCS):  The vehicle does not include the PCS level II charger which utilizes the Avcon conductive charge paddle.  The PCS requires a 240Vac / 40A input.  If you do not presently have a charger, PCSs can be purchased from Blue Sky Motors (with purchase of vehicle) for $600 each.

Will I be able to service my Ranger EV by myself?  This vehicle is a high voltage vehicle and requires special high voltage training and tools to repair.  Service of vehicle by unauthorized service personnel can result in vehicle damage, damage to vehicle components, and injury.  Therefore it is highly recommended that the auction winner live within 100 mile radius of a Ford Authorized Ranger EV repair facility for future support and service.  See list below.

How long will the traction battery last?  At the time of sale, Blue Sky Motors repairs the on-board high voltage battery pack to achieve the highest range possible with the use of state-of-the-art battery cycling equipment.  As noted above, these batteries have approximately 3 years of use and between 6,000 to 16,000 miles.  Since their use, these batteries have been stored and maintained in a climate controlled area.  Therefore, even though they chronologically are 8 years old, use-wise they are more equivalent to 4 year old batteries (note: cool storage does not hurt the batteries).  SCE claims that the Panasonic NiMH batteries can provide over 10 years / 100,000 miles life.

Note:  Use of this vehicle in very hot climates such as Las Vegas or Phoenix is not recommended.  NiMH technology can heat up in hot climates and takes too long to cool off prior to usage (charge or discharge).

Where do I purchase new battery packs when the time is needed:  Replacement NiMH modules are available from Blue Sky Motors and Ford Authorized Ranger EV repair facilities are trained in performing these repairs.

Are parts still available for this vehicle?:  Yes, there are a lot of parts available for this vehicle and Blue Sky Motors is the official used parts provider on behalf of Ford Motor Company.  Blue Sky Motors can ship parts direct to customers or to your selected service facility, in some cases cores fees may be required (in the event that original cores are not returned).  Call for pricing (916-929-7508).

Expected driving range and performance:  Nickel Metal Hydride battery packs can provide between 50 to 70 miles range (under normal driving conditions).  See above for actual range of this vehicle.  Driving range is a function of many conditions including temperature and driving habits.  If you need to drive more than 50 miles between charges, the Ford Ranger EV is not the vehicle for you.  Even though it may be able to drive further, for best life, Blue Sky motors recommends that daily commuting should be no more than 40 miles between charges for good reliability.  The vehicle has a distance to empty gage and this is very helpful to let you know when range is getting low.  Driving should never exceed the Ford battery range limit warning lights.
