Barn-fresh 1948 style Panhead w/ 1958 FLH motor which was running when parked in 1994. The transmission case had been welded, and the tranny rebuilt in 1992. The original owner's opinion is that the machining after the weld-up was flawed or the tranny would not have failed in 94. The cyliders are .030 oversize w/ 10.5:1 compression ratio pistons. Cam is by Sifton, lifters are solid. The bike rolls OK, but the chain has been removed as the tranny is locked-up. It has the stock springer front brake & a -63 juice-brake rear. No cross shaft tube in the frame for mechanical rear brakes. The frame is a lowered hardtail straight-leg. Current seat height is about 24." My old lady is 5'0 and can handle this Panhead better than her double-lowered Sportser, so if you're a small person you will like this set-up like it is.
If you wanted to make this "look" completely stock you will need to add the following;
1. Stock T-bar tabs welded back onto the frame between the tanks.2.Offset springer handlebars, w/ internals & cables for throttle and manual advance/retard.3.The correct front fender.4. The rocker-style footclutch pedal assy., repro left tank, shift gate, a jockey lid to replace the ratchet top, & stock hand-shift linkage. 5. Stock seat, t-bar & seatpost. 6. Stock round air cleaner assy. 7. Stock headlight & headlight bracket.8. Stock springer Horn assy & brackets.
To re-build this bike you are looking at a complete tear-down and re-build of motor and tranny. The tranny should be built in a different case. I have located an original un-molested tranny case, and will put you in touch with the man who has it, AND can build you a complete tranny w/ original parts if you like. The frame will need to be sand blasted, wheels cleaned up, seals replaced, etc. I would use everything that's there myself, blast & paint these original Kelsey-Hayes rims, re-lace w/ new SS spokes. Think about this, before you start bolting repro junk from China on this thing. I would further recomend that you go to .040 over w/ low comp pistons, stock cam, & hydraulic lifters. Keep the Linkert Carb, replace the cork float w/ a brass one, and ride it till the day you die. If you don't know what the above terms mean this is NOT the bike for you, get back on your Sportster and go have a whine spritzer, OK Biff? I have some of the parts you will need such as; a double saddle seat, T-bar, seat post, & some spare fenders, springer parts, rockers, Original headlight & bracket etc. I am willing to sell these to you as a seperate issue, they are not included. The bike has the correct Tombstone tail light but - it is a repro. I have an original H-D Guide Lamp marked chromed Tombstone tail light, w/ original Harley-Davidson marked glass lenses. That's as complete a description as I can post here... Can send high-res photos on request. I hope this bike gets a good home as it belonged to a life-long friend.
