This Women & Motorcycles print depicts a female rider tackling a dirt hill. During this era, women were prohibited from entering certain racing events. Women would dress in men's riding gear, and disquise their identities under the leather helmets. If the lady rider won the competition, sometimes they were denied the trophy and publicity, since the judges would rule that the lady rider was Unofficially registered for the event. Unfortunately, due to the laws of that time-frame, and the lack of the press covering the true winners of some races, that part of history has been lost. This piece attempts to capture some of that lost history, to share with our future generations.
The picture is so detailed, you can see the dust cloud and small spots of dirt flying from the rear wheel. The original painting by Self Representing Artist (SRA) and owner of Wynn Art Studio, Michelle Wynn, was on display in Wheels Through Time museum (Maggie Valley, NC). The original 5 different paintings were part of the museum's tribute to Women and Motorcycles from the years 1905 through 1955, and were on display from April 2006 until April 2007. Michelle's motorcycle artwork has been on display at the International Women's Conference (Athens, GA). After the year-long display at WTT museum, the originals began their on-going traveling exhibit through various Nationally acclaimed galleries. Wynn Art Studio donated a complete set of commemorative prints (like the one here for sale), to the WTT museum, as part of their permanent collection. Michelle's artwork has been shown during Myrtle Spring Bike Week, on display as part of "Motorcycle Art" alongside other famous motorcycle artists, and continues to be shown at various charity events and motorcycle events.
Michelle is also one of the few female motorcycle artists that actually drives her own motorcycle. She obtained her motorcycle driver's license in 2004, and has enjoyed riding and drawing motorcycles as part of her everyday life. Michelle is also an honorary Motor Maids (oldest female motorcycle riding group known to exist) member.
