Charles Bronson’s 1972 Honda XL250 motorcycle.
Model: 1972 Honda XL250 Motorsport.
Frame #: XL250 1015035.
Odometer: 2047 original miles.
Formerly the property of legendary Hollywood actor Charles Bronson, this dirt bike was owned, registered and ridden regularly by the silver screen icon and remains in original unrestored condition.
This motorcycle was consigned by the Bronson estate (after the actor’s death) to the 2007 Bonhams auction at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles where the current owner purchased it. This auction was of particular importance because it included – in addition to items from Charles Bronson – items previously owned by Steve McQueen and Von Dutch (aka Kenneth Howard) and was highly publicized.
In addition to its unique ownership history, this motorbike has the additional distinction of being an historically important model too. 1972 was the first year for this model and was Honda’s very first commercial attempt at a dirt bike. This, therefore, is the “father” of Honda’s extremely impressive and successful line of off-road motorbikes.
The superior equipment and build made the go-anywhere XL extremely popular in the American market. Weighing approx. 300lbs with fuel and oil, it has a single cylinder 4-stroke, 250cc motor with an all-alloy, overhead-cam, 4-valve unit with integral 5-speed gearbox, housed in a robust cradle-type frame.
Still registered in Bronson’s name, this motorcycle has not been modified in any respect since it was purchased at auction from the Bronson estate. It has been in dry storage since the auction and has not been titled, registered or started. From all appearances, it would need only minor reconditioning to run (new plugs, clean carb, etc.). Gas is still in the tank, there are visible marks of use on the body and some minor rust with pitting on some of the brightwork. The tires are as new, the upholstery is as new (no tears or repairs) and all rubber components are in good to excellent condition. In all, the motorcycle is in remarkable condition for a 37 year-old machine and has been left in exactly the same state as when Bronson last rode it.
Please note, the motorcycle was consigned by the Bronson estate to Bonhams Auctioneers without a title and sold as such. However, included were all the following documents: original California registration cards in Bronson’s name for 1984, 1985 and 1986, and an original 1985 AAA insurance card in Bronson’s name. These documents will be given to the new owner of this motorcycle.
An authentic and functional piece of popular culture and Hollywood history, this motorcycle will forever remind you that Charles Bronson’s character in “The Magnificent Seven” would’ve preferred to ride away on a two-wheeled iron horse had he been given the choice.
