I am finally selling my 1987 Maserati Biturbo Si. Maserati only produced approximately 450 of these that year. The 1987 Si is a fuel injected model, and by this year, they had most of the Biturbo bugs worked out from the earlier carbureted years. The car starts, runs, and drives great. The 2.5 liter twin turbocharged engine is very strong and responsive and has been very reliable for me.

I purchased the car in 1999 and have only driven it approximately 5,000 miles in the past 10 years (current odometer reading is 59,500). Depending on the literature you read, the biturbo engine is rated between 188 and 200 horsepower. All of this power in a car that is several hundred pounds lighter than a Golf GTI.

This car has the real wood laminate (burl wood) on the dash with the Maserati script inlaid, (I believe inlaid mahogany). It also has the original gold-plated Swiss-made Maserati designer clock; not the digital red LED type (see photo). I have heard that this clock would be several hundred dollars to replace. The car also has the original Blaupunkt cassette deck and Maserati Speakers.  Power steering, windows, seats and locks were standard features on the car and are in working order.

The engine has been cared for during my ownership of the car. I have always let the oil come up to temperature before putting my foot into the turbos and I always let them cool down for a couple of minutes before shutting it off. The turbos are very responsive and hold steady in the orange (just below the red) without wavering on the boost gauge.

The car had a tune up in 2008 with new plugs, timing belt, air filter, antifreeze flushed and replaced along with fuel pressure check and adjustment and replacement/adjustment to water temp sensor. As my mechanic put it, “this car just screams”. I was particularly happy to hear this from a guy that regularly works on Porsche, Lotus, Ferrari and BMWs. And bear in mind this was said about a 22 year old car, at that. I also have service history from the previous owners that going back to 1988.

The car was repainted in 1996 and has been garage kept ever since. There are no signs of rust that I can see. I purchased the car in 1999 and had the front seats reupholstered in that same year to replace the worn Alcantara (simulated suede) with camel Ultrasuede. (same color, and texture, different manufacturer)

The car comes with two car covers with storage bags. One is a heavy custom cover (canvas like fabric with a soft inner layer) and one is a lighter cover for daily use.

Even though the car runs and drives very well, there are some things that could be addressed (mostly cosmetic):

  • The AC system needs a charge. It will hold a charge for about 6 weeks so I usually recharge it once in the summer (about a $25 DIY activity).
  • The speedometer reads about 60% of true speed.
  • The odometer has been checked against a GPS unit and does read true for distance, so the mileage on the odometer is correct and true.
  • The headliner needs to be replaced/installed.
  • The driver’s seat has a small tear in the Ultrasuede. (see pic)
  • The 20+ year old wood laminate is showing it’s age and needs to be rejuvenated and repaired. (see pics)
  • The rubber bumper insert on the front bumper is distorted from age. (see pic)
  • The rims are showing their age with brake dust and could use a good refinishing. (See pics)
  • One rim has some curb rash.
  • The passenger upper door panel inner has color faded. (see pick)
  • The driver lower door panel inner has color faded. (see pick)
  • The dash has a small pea sized area just to the right of the instrument binnacle that need to be repaired. (see pics)

The Good News…

  • I have several yards of the Ultrasuede material that will go with the car and can be used for a repair of the seat and the headliner.
  • I have a new replacement front bumper insert to replace the distorted one.

The Really Good News…

  • I have many spare parts that will go with the car. Most came out of a 84/85 Biturbo I previously owned and the rest I have accumulated over the years.
  • 5-speed manual ZF transmission. (yes a complete and good transmission)
  • Several assorted dash lights
  • Several headlights
  • Tail light lens assemblies
  • Tail light bulbs
  • Assorted replacement relays
  • New transmission rubber mount bushing
  • Original Sales brochures (3 or 4) all in mint condition.
  • 26 past issues of VIALE CIRO MENOTTI, the Maserati Club International publication.
  • A handful of other Maserati books.
  • Full comprehensive manual on CD covering several Biturbo iterations and improvements (a few thousand pages)
  • Finally and best of all…an MIE ground effects kit including front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts and rear deck spoiler. This kit makes the car look much more aggressive. This kit was part of a full perfomance package offered by MIE in the early 80s selling for close to $4,000. It was called the MIE RS.

I have tried to describe the car as accurately and completely as possible but I am human and may have missed something. This is not a perfect car, please keep in mind that this is a 22 year old Italian automobile with 22 years of wear. Please ask questions before you bid to ensure that this car is what you think it is. Please ask for more pictures if there are areas you need more detail on.

On Nov-01-09 at 08:36:54 PST, seller added the following information:

**UPDATE**:  Original description of the dash was not completely correct.  In addition to the pea sized area that needs to be repaired, there are a couple of scratches and smaller areas (also just right of the binnacle) that would need to be repaired as well.

On Nov-01-09 at 08:48:10 PST, seller added the following information:

**UPDATE**:  The MIE ground effects kit mentioned above is not installed on the car.  The pitcures of the grey car showing the MIE ground effects kit are for reference only, to show what the kit would look like if you were to install them on the Red vehicle.  The grey car in the photo is not part of this ebay auction and is not for sale.
