In 1932 Packard, like most auto manufacturers, was in the grip of the Depression. In an effort to stimulate sales they introduced the "Light 8". This was a smaller version of the big Packards and was targeted at cars from LaSalle, Nash and Ford. While the Light 8 sold well, it ended up taking sales away from the higher volume Packards rather than the competetion. For this reason Packard stopped production after only one year.
The Model 900 Light 8 was avaiable in 4 body styles. The 553,558,559 and 563. Total production for the 4 styles was 6,785 units. Of those 6,785 units only 510 were the 558 2/4 passenger stationary rumble seat coupes.
That is what is offered here. This Light 8 is powered by Packards L head inline 8 cylinder iron block/Aluminum crankcase engine displacing 319 cubic inches and developing 110 hosepower. The transmission is a 3 speed manual gearbox. This car was delivered to Earl Anthony distributors on 4/8/32. This car has just been removed from 10 years in dry storage. The fuel tank was removed, cleaned and lined. The fuel lines, fuel pump and carburetor were replaced with new units. The engine runs strong and typical of Packards is extremely smooth. The transmission, brakes and clutch all work well. We purchased this car in 1999 with the intention of doing a restoration on it. At the time of purchase the car had a 20 year old cosmetic restoration. The paint is still in good condition overall however there are some spots that have chipped off. The interior is in very good condition with no rips or wear spots in the seats, carpet or door panels. This car is NOT rusted or banged up, nor does it show any signs of accident damage. The car starts easily, runs and drives well. There is an issue with the wireing. The best solution would be to install a new harness. Aside from the wireing I am aware of no other conditions that would prevent this car from being used on a regular basis.
With only 510 units made the 558 Style Light 8 is surley one of the rarest Packards produced.
