You are bidding on a beautiful 1979 Trans Am with 73,500 original miles and only 3 owners. This Trans Am is much nicer than one that sold recently for $21,100. The "L78" designation is for the Pontiac 400 CI. V-8 (not the anemic 403 Olds V-8). The "WS6" is for the special performance package with four-wheel disc brakes, 8" inch wide aluminum "snowflake" wheels and special suspension package with front and rear sway bars. It out-cornered Corvettes in skid pad tests. Included are copies of Pontiac Historic Society documentation - "build sheets", window sticker and general information about the car. 2,917 TA's were made with the L-78 and manual transmission combination. I don't know how few were produced with the L-78/Manual/WS6 combination, but this is a rare car! Note that it is NOT a Barrett/Jackson quality car, but in my opinion it's very close, because it is so straight overall.
The original 400 CI Pontiac V-8 was removed by the second owner, who bought the car in 1994. He installed a built 455 and I bought the car in 2006 with the 400 on an engine stand. The 400 was recently professionally re-built by Peter's Performance and put back in the car. It still has "break-in" miles to go. The engine, Borg Warner T-21 manual transmission and Posi-traction rear end are all "matching numbers" original to the car.
Options included are: L-78 400ci. Pontiac engine. L.S. Differential. Air Cond. Colored seat belts. Rear window Def. Soft ray glass. Extra insulation. Lamp group. Power windows. Spoiler. Tilt steering wheel. WS6 special performance package. Custom interior trim group.
The condition of the components of the car are as follows:
Bumpers: The bumpers are clean of scratches or splits. Paint is good with no scratches or chips. Amazing but true! (See photos).
Sheet metal: Very straight, with no "door dings" Never hit or repaired. No rust, except for minor surface rust on some parts of the underside. Paint: The Atlantis Blue was re-applied by the previous owner including a clear coat that is superior to the original factory finish. NOT A "SHOW CAR" PAINT JOB, but strangers tell me what a great paint job it is and ask where I got it done. New decals, but no firebird on the hood.
Windows: The windshield has a very small rock chip lower left. The door windows are very clean. Left door window has some minor scratches. Right door window is very clean of scratches. Rear window is very clean of scratches or chips (optional rear window defroster.)
Doors: No chips or rust showing. Doors close with a single "clunk", not a series of rattles. No sag or other mis-alignment.
Wheels: Original "WS6" optional 8" wide wheels with polished rims (polish is not quite original but prettier), new wheel lugs and new GM center caps (see photos).
Interior: The interior is original except for the radio and the carpet, which have been replaced. The entire dash is 9 of 1-10 scale. All gauges work except the tach/clock. The heater core blew out recently and has nor been replaced. Hot water lines have been re-routed to eliminate the heater core. The seats are original "custom trim velour" option and very clean for original cloth seats. The rear seat cover has some sun damage at the top of the seat. The door panels are very clean with minor discoloration in some places due to age. The center console-mounted power window buttons work, and the console is 9 of 1-10 scale. The velour headliner is original and very clean with no tears. All in all, the interior is beautiful for a 28 year-old car.
Engine: The Pontiac 400 CI V-8 is newly rebuilt after being out of the car for 16 years. Block was dipped and painted, cylinders honed, new freeze plugs, cam bearings and crank bearings. Original rods and pistons with new Perfect Circle rings. 6X Heads were rebuilt and used on the 455, and have 3,000 miles on them. They were "cc'd" at 92 cc's and have inner and outer valve springs. A new Crane cam (intake 0.458 lift w/288 duration; Exhaust 0.473 lift w/ 296 duration)and lifters have "break-in" miles on them. New water pump, Melling oil pump, re-built distributor w/ new cap and plug wires. The original AC compressor is properly mounted, but the previous owner removed the AC lines and we didn't replace them. The AC on early Pontiacs is very anemic anyway. Edelbrock dual plane "Performer" intake manifold (original manifold available) and Rochester "Quadrajet" rebuilt for performance, Pontiac Ram Air III exhaust manifold milled straight for a good seal. Flywheel refinished and new clutch and throw-out bearing. "X" exhaust system is otherwise brand new with incredible rumble from the Magnaflow mufflers.
Frame and suspension: Original "WS6" suspension with original frame components. Sub-frame connectors added, but can be removed if desired. The WS6 suspension rides like the old sports cars, where you can feel the surface of the road.
Performance: The car travels straight and true, due in part to the sub-frame connectors installed. They can be removed if you desire a true "original" Trans Am. The four wheel disc brakes stop straight from 100 MPH. The steering is ultra-quick and responsive. The tranny and rear end don't "howl" or jerk. The tranny shifts very positively. The intake and exhaust modifications made make the 400 much quicker and stronger. This car is much faster than my stock '76 400 Formula, and handles better due to the WS6 performance package.
This car is much too nice for my purposes. I'm moving to Reno, Nev. and this winter I'll build a '76 TA "Hot Rod." This Trans Am is much nicer than a '79 that sold recently for $21,100. That one did not have a fresh engine, etc! You will be proud to own and drive this car! I get "thumbs up" whenever I drive it. Included is a new front end mask (muscle cars don't wear "bras"!), a custom car cover and new dash mat to protect the pristine dash pad.
Now for the legal stuff. You are bidding on the car to purchase it "As Is, Where Is". The representations above include my opinions of the car and should not be relied upon for your final decision to bid on the car. I am not a "detail" person so I may have missed something. You are urged to have the car inspected by an independent auto inspection service. I've purchased two cars without an inspection, relying on the seller's description. I think I got "burned" both times. I want the buyer to be happy with their purchase, so make sure this car is what you want by having an inspection report. Please ask questions and I'll give you my best answer.
Please don't play "Fantasy Auction" with this car. Please don't bid unless you have your money arranged to pay for the car within 7 days of end of auction. I will do my best to have non-paying bidders eliminated from Ebay. Your bid is your contract to purchase the car per stated payment terms. There will be no extensions of time to pay for the car, or "second chance" offers. I reserve the right to cancel bids or otherwise refuse to accept bids for any reason.
Please feel free to E-mail me at jaxta@fastjackta.com if you have a specific question, or call me at 775-830-2754 if you have a question I can personally answer.
Good luck with your bid. You'll love this car!!
