Body, Trim and Paint
Having always resided in California, the body remains in very good condition. The floors, longitudinals and closing panels are original with no rust. The battery box also shows no rust. The trunk lid, engine lid and doors are all original and stamped with last three digits of the chassis number. Panel gaps are good to excellent. The body is free of door dings. There is only one small dented area on the roof.
All the trim appears to be original. The glass is all original with no chips or scrapes. Front and rear light lenses show no cracks. All chrome parts shine up very well. All weatherstripping is present and in fair to good condition.
The attractive Signal Red paint (color code #601) is likely more than ten years old, but remains in good condition. According to the metal tag on the door hinge plate, the original color was Heron Grey (color code #739). The finish still shines up nicely with only a few minor paint chips. Overall, the paint is certainly acceptable for a nice driver.
Interior
The black leatherette interior is all original, except for the carpet. The dashpad, door panels, rear panels and rear seats are all in nice original condition. The original front seat materials are worn and are ready for reupholstering. The headliner is original with only two small tears and one seam separation.
The gauges, switches and knobs on the face of the dash are all in good original condition. The original steering wheel and sunvisors are present and in good condition.
Electricals
Headlights (low and high beams), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, license plate lights and variable speed windshield wipers are functional. The clock and horn are not functioning. The starter and generator are functioning fine. Speedometer, tachometer, oil temp and fuel gauges are functional. Oil pressure and generator lights are functional. The odometer is functional and currently reads 72,366 miles, which is likely 172,366. An older aftermarket Clarion AM/FM/Cassette stereo is installed and functions fine. The battery is new. A 6VDC to 12VDC power converter is installed in the trunk to power the stereo.
Engine and Transmission
The engine is the original 1600 Normal (engine type 616/1) and was originally numbered 606851. During the last rebuild, the third case piece was changed and displays engine number 811303. So other than the third case piece, the engine is the original. The original Zenith carburetors are installed. The exact mileage since the last engine rebuild was completed is not known, but is very likely not more than 50,000 miles. The engine starts on the first turn of the key and once running it idles and accelerates smoothly with good power. The engine was likely upgraded with a big bore piston kit during the last rebuild. The correct style dual exhaust muffler is installed. A new fuel petcock assembly has been recently installed.
The correct 741 type transmission is installed and shifts smoothly into every gear with no grinding. Prior owner stated transmission had been rebuilt recently.
Suspension, Wheels, Tires and Brakes
The suspension is in good original condition and has been recently lubricated. The ride is comfortable with no unusual noises. Boge shocks are installed at each corner and are in good condition.
The original KPZ wheels are installed and are each dated 8/61.
165SR15 Michelin XZX tires are installed. The tires all show good tread, but should be replaced due to their age.
The brakes are functioning well with a new master cylinder, hoses, lines and wheel cylinders recently installed. The emergency brake is correctly adjusted and holds tight.
Extra Parts and Documentation
The following parts are included: Lemmerz spare wheel, jack, toolkit and pair of sheepskin seat covers.
Documentation includes an original 356C owner's manual.
