1958 Porsche 356
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2006 Intermeccanica 356 Speedster reproduction of 1958 Porsche 356 Speedster, with motor conversion to Subaru 2.5L boxer four. Super performance, with rock-solid reliability and low maintenance of a race-built Subaru 2.5L boxer four. When you open the engine lid, it even looks right, true to the original boxer four engine, but with more power, better reliability, more convenience (no clogged idle jets, no synchronizing of multiple carburetors, no valve adjustments) and better longevity. Well cared for and meticulously maintained, always garaged. It does have a few nicks in the paint - - that can be easily repaired, if you wish a cosmetically perfect car. For California residents - car is SB100 certified - which means it never has to be smogged in California. Car is registered as a speciality construction vehicle, per SB100. Insured with my existing auto insurance company, as a regular car, with premiums a bit less than the premiums on a 1989 Porsche 911 Carbriolet . Includes car cover, bra, convertible top-only cover - should you wish to cover the top and windows without mounting the complete car cover. Matching tonneau cover, which has only been used two or three times. The Speedster was built-to-order by Henry and his craftspeople at Intermeccanica Customer Coach Builders in late 2005, delivered as a 2006 model. Outfront Motorsports of Buena Park, California - builder of Subaru motors for off-road racing and other applications - built a 2.5L for the Speedster, which Vintage Spyders installed. Outfront Motorsports then dyno-tuned the motor, resulting in 200 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. Outfront Motorsports has achieved 500+ horsepower with this same type of motor by adding a turbo. If you're interested in more power, at a reasonable cost, check out their website (see below) for turbo systems designed for their reconstructed Subaru motors. Modifications Outfront Motorsports-built Subaru 2.5L boxer four, normally aspirated (though a turbo can be easily added) High-capacity Griffin radiator Size -20 (1-7/16" O.D.) stainless braided radiator hoses, with anodized fittings Aluminum radiator fill Dual push-pull electric radiator fans User-programmable Engine Management Computer (EMS), with PC software High-torque starter Kennedy 1700 lb. clutch Vintage Air under-dash combination air conditioning evaporator / water heater, plenty of cooling and heating. Mangels original-style wide-five wheels, power-coated, 15" x 5.5", plus wide-five hub conversion Lightweight, removable drum-skins, so if you operate the car without hubcaps, it looks like you have the original drum brakes. Recent Bridgestone 185/65-R15 tires, now with ~5,000 miles, purchased new, installed February, 2009 Custom sheet metal undercarriage air scoop for radiator Custom weatherproof fiberglass covers for EMS, relays, other electronics, air cleaner. Performance 200 horsepower, 200 pound-feet of torque 70 mph @ 3,000 rpm 80 mph @ 3,500 rpm 7,000+ rpm redline 31-36 mpg freeway 21-22 mpg in town This car is fun to drive - low-to-the-ground, 2,000 lbs., 200 horsepower, 200 pound-feet of torque, rack-and-pinion steering, large disc brakes, Derrington reproduction steering wheel, comfortable-yet-firm bucket seats. Lots of headroom when the top is up, though the car is best experienced with the top down. To order this car, new, today, could cost - in its original air-cooled configuration - up to US$75,000. Add US$12,000-$15,000 for professional conversion to a water-cooled, fuel-injected Subaru boxer four, including cost of the motor. Intermeccanica cars have always demanded a premium, but current international exchange rates makes new Intermeccanicas particularly expensive for US customers. Mileage on car since Subaru motor installed: 13,126 Total mileage on car: 29,807 I've driven the car with the Subaru motor installed for about a year and a half, a bit over 13,000 miles, in diverse driving conditions - 105˚F outside temperature, air conditioning on maximum, at freeway speeds and idling in stop-and-go traffic; high-speed runs across the desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas; twisty roads on mountain passes at 8,000' - the car is dialed in, runs great, dependable in all road conditions encountered so far. If you chose to boost the performance, via add-on turbo, the car is a solid base to work from. If you chose to leave it as is, it's still a thrill to get in a drive every day.
