Restored 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS L78 396 4 Speed!

GM spotted Ford more than two years and 1.3 million Mustangs before answering the pony-car challenge. When it did, the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS396 had instant muscle car credibility.

From the start, the Camaro featured a Super Sport edition as an authoritative counterpunch to the Mustang GT. It added $211 to the $2,572 Camaro coupe or the $2,809 convertible. Included were firmer springs and shocks, wide-oval tires, a special hood with die-cast simulated louvers, and a bumblebee stripe around the car's nose. Many buyers combined it with the $105 Rally Sport package, which included hidden headlamps.

A new 295-bhp four-barrel 350-cid V-8 was the standard SS engine. With a four-speed and 3.31:1 gears, Motor Trend's SS350 ran 0-60 in 8 seconds and the quarter in 15.4 at 90 mph. That was directly comparable to a 335-bhp 390-cid Mustang GT.

Then, a few months into the model year, Chevy unleashed the SS 396. It initially came in 325-bhp tune and tacked $263 onto the SS group. Still later in the year, the 375-bhp L78 variant was offered for $500. Since the L78 violated GM's rule against any car except the Corvette exceeding 10-pounds-per horsepower, it technically was listed as a dealer-installed option (a few high-performance dealers also would even go on to install 400+ horsepower 427 cubic-inch V-8s). SS396 Camaros came standard with a four-speed manual; the three-speed automatic was a $226 option.

This beautiful first-generation 1967 Camaro is finished in original Bolero Red with the characteristic black strips around the nose. It is one of only 1,138 L78 cars built in 1967 and underwent a complete restoration in 2002. Today it shows only 2579 miles and remains in excellent running condition throughout.

During the restoration, the L78 375-horsepower 396 was rebuilt to stock specifications using a correctly date-coded block. The engine was painted Chevy orange and all the tinwork was replated or replaced, then reinstalled for a 100% factory look. The engine compartment itself is completely restored and has been recently detailed to show standards, including the correct hoses, clamps and a replacement Delco battery. The firewall shows the correct color-coded markings and stamps that indicate the car's progress down the assembly line.

The 4-speed manual transmission was rebuilt at the same time and reinstalled behind the fresh big-block. A reconditioned driveshaft and U-joints feed power to the rebuilt 12-bolt rear with Posi-traction.

This car is also equipped with power steering, a front and rear spoiler, and 14-inch Rallye wheels with reproduction F70-14 Firestone redline radials.

Let's talk about production numbers. Chevrolet had a pretty good hit with their new car, selling 220,917 in total. Of those, 31,411 (14%) were SS models. A mere 1,138 of those were L78 cars—that's only one half of one percent of the build total! The stiff $500.30 price bump might have had something to do with it.

The Bolero Red exterior is flawless and vastly better than anyone at GM was building in 1967. Obviously the car received a top-quality paint job that has been lovingly preserved over the past several years, and it could still be a show-winner today. The exterior trim is in terrific condition, all of it having been replated, polished, or replaced during the restoration, and there's not so much as a wrinkle or dimple anywhere. This is an absolutely stunning car.

Every single piece of weather-stripping and insulation in the car is brand new as well. The trunk area has been properly refinished and looks factory fresh, with a correct full sized spare, trunk mat, and jack assembly. Documentation includes the original 1967 Owner Protection and Warranty booklet with the original owner's name on it, as well as the original selling dealership in Eugene, Oregon.

The black interior is anything but ordinary, with comfortable buckets, a clean dash pad, full gauges, and the center console. Newly covered seats, new door panels, a restored dash with 7000 RPM tach, instrument cluster, and gauges join new carpeting and a new headliner for appearance's sake. There are new handles and knobs, new pedal pads and a new black ball on the chrome shifter. The original Delco AM radio works perfectly, as does the clock, making this a comfortable place to spend miles.

This is a truly exceptional, very RARE, properly restored and kept big block SS with some high value options. This is an investment grade car which can be driven and enjoyed for years to come—few cars can do both well, making this Camaro a winner! This is one of the best values we've had in a muscle car in years. Don't think about this one too long; the lucky new owner will be showing it somewhere before the end of the month!
