GENERAL:
This vessel is an Ex-Navy Machine Shop Barge built in 1943 to overhaul engines and equipment on site. It has no propulsion. It was intended to be towed to a location and be self sufficient with power, water, heat, and living spaces for crew. A shore power connection is wired to the switch board.
The 100 ft x 36 ft barge below the main deck is divided into two watertight sections by a mid-ship bulkhead with a 12-dog steel watertight door. The rake ends are open to the forward and aft compartments. There is a stairwell that descends from the main deck to the lower holds. This is a non-tight passageway. There are voids below the deck in the holds with sumps in each compartment. Voids are 24” deep.
There are 2 strakes of 1/3rd pipe guards on the sides of the barge , one at the deck edge and the second approximately 48” below. The sections were cut from 12” pipe.
Rake ends terminate at head logs which are protected with 1/3rd pipe sections.
The two tier house has the lower section cleared for shop functions. The upper tier is set up for accommodations. The house top has limited safety railings. The vessel has been stripped of all accommodations, galley equipment. Any thing not welded to the barge has been removed. The equipment described herein remains with the vessel. PLEASE NOTE – All college instructional equipment and inventory will be removed prior to sale closing.
HULL STRUCTURE:
UT readings by others indicate the original shell plate on the bottom and sides was 0.375” steel. Due to wastage over time the nominal thickness appears to be 0.250 to 0.31. Only one area on the preliminary UT report provided shows a thicknesss of 0.200.
The grid for the test reportedly was taken at 1 ft intervals along hull girths at stations spaced 2 ft apart as measured from waterline to waterline at rake ends.
Bottom and side scantlings are 6” T-bars set at 24” spacing. Transverse web frames below the main deck are 16” deep frames. Longitudinal deck stiffeners are 6” T-bar. The transverse bulkhead is assumed to be at least 5/16”. Transverse frame and bulkhead spacing is on 16 ft centers. Transverse non tight longitudinal and transverse bulkheads and partitions are assumed to be 5/16”.
Rake end bulkheads are assumed to be 5/16” steel. There are tanks at the ends of the compartments adjacent to the rake ends. Capacities are unknown. Accesses are thru 15 x 23 bolted plate man-holes.
Steel house sides are flush with the side shell. It is assumed the plate thickness is 3/16” due to weld shrink marks at butts and stiffeners. Longitudinal scantlings on sides are a single run of 5 x 3 x ¼ steel angle midway between the main deck and upper deck just below window level. Transverse frames below the upper deck are 12” deep frames. Transverse frames are spaced at 16 ft centers. Longitudinal upper deck stiffeners are 6”
T-bar. Partial bulkheads and partitions on main deck level assumed to be 3/16” steel.
Upper deck structure and house top has reinforcement in way of tanks. Stringers and shell plate are assumed similar to house. House top scantlings assumed to be 5 x 3 x ¼” angle.
HULL CLOSURES:
2 each 6-dog water tight steel doors 30 x 66 are located at each end of the deck lower deck house. These are located at the house front and back starboard side, 2 each 6 dog water tight steel doors 30 x 66 are located at each end of the upper level house at the top of the platform at the upper deck level. Stanchions and safety chains enclose both ends of the deck house at the main deck level. 1 each 12 dog steel water tight door 30 x 66 welded into transverse bulkhead on the starboard side leading to the aft compartment. Stairway and main deck opening looking forward from the lower starboard side leading up to the main deck.
