*PLEASE READ THIS!*
I am relisting this car due to a non-paying bidder. He was in Canada, and didn't factor in all the import considerations. I would ask you kindly to ONLY BID ON MY AUCTION IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT FOLLOWING THROUGH WITH THE PURCHASE QUICKLY AND SMOOTHLY! I am not a car salesman! I am just a regular guy who needs to sell my beloved beetle project. I understand that buying a car on ebay is stressful. Please understand that selling my car on ebay is stressful, also! I have included a tremendous amount of information about the car, and have included lots of pictures, both during, and after the restoration. The auction will run for 10 days, across two weekends. This will give any potential buyer as much time as possible to ask any questions, or do any research they find necessary. I would be very happy for you to come and look at the car! You can ask any questions you have, and we will go for a ride in it! My schedule is flexible. I will answer any questions quickly, and will be happy to try to provide any additional pictures you might need. Thank you for looking at my auction!
Thank you for looking at my 1963 Volkswagen Beetle. It has underwent a complete body-off restoration, with a few custom modifications. The car has been completely disassembled, cleaned, stripped, repainted, and reassembled with the best products available. I started with a nice, rust-free, unmolested original car. Its original engine seized in 1986, and it sat in a barn since then. It was in amazing condition! It had 69,000 miles on it, and the 1986 license plate was still on it. The title, pan, and body numbers match.
THE BODY
The body was truly remarkable! It was difficult to find such a solid old bug in the Southeast! The doors shut like a bank vault. Every bolt in the pan, fenders, and running boards came out perfectly. The whole car had very negligible rust issues. There was a tiny spot on the lower driver-door skin, and a small spot inside the very rear of the right heater channel. The rocker areas, inner fender areas, package tray, and front bulkhead areas were beautiful. I will include pics of these areas after they were stripped/blasted and primed. The lower front apron is a new repro. Everything else is original German sheetmetal. Everything has been stripped, aligned, primed, and painted with black PPG single-stage urethane. Inner surfaces of the doors and quarter-areas were painted. I will include pics of the body in the booth during buffing. All glass except the new windshield is original Sekurit, including popout quarter windows. All weatherstripping has been replaced with quality Wolfsburg West, and WestCoastMetric rubber. Body- and window-moldings are new German, where I could find them, and Wolfsburg West repro. A nice, unused set of older (Mfg. in 1982) repro bumpers, and Wolfsburg West repro mirrors were used. Headlight and taillight lenses and trim are nice, original German parts. Engine cover has quick-release hinge-pins. The doors, hood, and trunk all line up perfectly, and open and close smoothly and correctly. WHEELS/TIRES
New CMS polished aluminum 2-piece wheels. Fronts are 15 X 3.5 with new Nankang 135s, and rears are 15 X 5.5 with new Nankang 165/70s.
THE INTERIOR
The ivory interior is all new Wolfsburg West; perforated headliner, original style seat covers, and original style door panels. The seats have brand new factory-style woven-coconut pads (the interior has the familiar NOS VW smell!). Seat frames and steering column have been stripped and painted with ivory urethane. Oatmeal-colored carpet is a Sure-Fit "Premier" kit. Arm-rests, visors, dome light, door and window handles and escutcheons are new Wolfsburg West reproductions. Original VDO gauges work correctly. Radio-delete is original German. A trusted professional upholstery specialist installed the interior, and the result was an impeccable job!
THE ENGINE
Original (seized) engine is long-gone, replaced with 1641cc dual-port, purchased complete, with 1200 miles on it. I did an extended test-drive; it ran great and had 60 psi oil pressure hot. It has a new aftermarket case with case-savers, Mahle pistons and cylinders, 1974 original VW heads, new stock cam and lifters, finned-aluminum valve covers and oil breather system, and a Melling high-volume oil pump. It has a large plate-type racing oil cooler, mounted remotely under the package tray, and a remote spin-on oil filter plumbed with Aeroquip braided stainless lines, a Pertronix distributor (electronic ignition) and coil, Weber progressive 2 bbl carburetor and intake, SCAT aluminum degree pulley, and a SCAT oil strainer blockoff/drain-plug kit. It has a new clutch and pressure plate, new German throwout bearing, and new fuel pump. Exhaust is a new Tri-Mil ceramic-coated Euro 2-tip. The engine does not have heater boxes on it, so there is no heat or defrost!
THE CHASSIS The brake drums are powder-coated black, and Bil-Don VW-Racing long studs have been added. New German rear seal kits were used. It has new brake shoes, hardware kits, TRW wheel cylinders, D.O.T.-approved braided stainless hoses, all new gold cad-plated hardlines, and a new German dual-master cylinder. D.O.T.5 (silicone) brake fluid was used.
All the cables and housings are brand new.
VW front beam has been narrowed 4 inches, and ride-height adjusters have been added. O.E. VW spindles have been fitted with new German king/link pins and bushings, German control arm- and wheel-bearings. O.E. tie-rods have been shortened, and new TRW tierod ends used. New German seals and dustcaps have also been added.
Original transaxle was cleaned and inspected by a local VW shop. It has been carefully clearanced for a 12V flywheel, has new axle boots, and a Prothane urethane mounting kit. The rear suspension has been lowered 2 outer splines, and the spring plates notched for clearance. Monroe air shocks are installed to quickly and easily adjust the final ride height in the rear. (They have 110 p.s.i. in them in the first picture. They have 70 p.s.i. in the car-show pictures, where the car is about 2-3 inches lower).
Pan was completely cleaned, stripped, primed, and painted with PPG urethane, top and bottom. It was NOT sandblasted! I didn't want to get sand and debris into the tunnel where it couldn't be cleaned back out. Pictures of the pan, and partially assembled chassis included in the pics.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Car has been converted to 12 volt, and all the wiring and bulbs are new, with a modern ATO fuse block, and Wolfsburg West 12V wiper motor armature. The wiring harness is all routed cleanly, and is beautiful. Wiper arms are original German, and blades are new R.P.M. All lights and horn are new and work correctly. It has a 12V one-wire alternator kit, a new 525 c.c.a. battery, and all new battery cables. The starter is a brand new Bosch, with a new 12V/6V conversion bushing.
This is a nice car! The high level of fit, finish, and materials is evident upon close inspection, and I would welcome any bidders to see the car "in person" before end of auction. I went to great lengths to find a good, solid car, and have used quality parts and materials in the restoration. My vision was for a slightly modified car for the "coolness" factor, with the convenience of a modern 12V system, larger engine and upgraded brake system. I was fanatical about not permanently detracting from the originality of the body features. No holes have been drilled or filled, and no permanent modifications have been made. The car's original front beam/suspension is available to the winning bidder, in case you would like to return the car to stock suspension. It is unrestored, but complete from drum to drum, including steering box and linkage. Original German (American language) owner's manual (dated Nov. '62) is also included in auction. The car fires right up, sounds great, drives good, and looks really nice. It has been clean and dry since day-one of the restoration project, and has been driven a total of about 100 miles on a few dry days since recent completion.
Auction will start at $1 with no reserve. Winning bidder will buy the car, as-is, with no warranty offered. Clean, clear, current North Carolina title in my name. When the previous owner had the title transferred to him, SCDMV incorrectly listed the model year as 1966, and when transferred to me in North Carolina, we didn't attempt to correct it. Car was actually made in Germany in December, 1962, and exported as a 1963 model. All the numbers on the title, pan, and body plate match. I am in Arden, NC, 28704. I cannot provide shipping. Any shipping arrangements will need to be made by buyer. I am happy to help with loading. $500 non-refundable deposit by Paypal required within 24 hours of auction's end. Balance of full payment required within 10 days. Payment to be in the form of cash, or cleared into cash before car or title leave my hands. I can store the car (safe, indoors) up to 30 days, after full payment is cleared, while pickup is arranged. Thank you for looking at my auction. I will answer any questions as soon as possible. Good luck bidding!
