Vehicle History Report Summary for 1965 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Camper
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Welcome. Up for auction is a wonderful, original Birch Green Westfalia Volkswagen Camper. This is a 1965 that has been just about completely rebuilt. A major plus is that this Bus has lived it's entire life in the desert and has only had 2 previous owners! They obviously have been very meticulous and caring. It is sure to be a wonderful investment and will be a joy to own. An amazing amount of work has been invested to make this a wonderful and reliable cross country road trip machine. It is absolutely going to steal the attention of the more expensive exotics at the gas pumps! This Bus has been very well taken care of and it shows!
The entire lower end of the Bus from the beltline down, as well as the immediate underneath, has recently been resprayed it's original Velvet green with quality Dupont Centari paint. The quality of the work is not quite show winning but is certainly well above average for a daily driver. The plans are to drive and enjoy this bus as well as show it!
Mechanically this Camper has had an amazing recent rebuild history! The transmission, engine, electrical, brakes, suspension, and steering have all been very recently rebuilt and all have approximately 2500 in town miles on them which has allowed any kinks to be worked out. The big road trip for this Bus is waiting for YOU!
The engine's rebuild included an entire tear-down and meticulous assembly. The engine size was enlarged to 1776cc. The engine was modified to be more powerful in the torque department to help with the push up hills while remaining reliable with a stock single carburetor and components like electronic ignition, which replaces the points and condensor. Every single component down to the core of the engine has been pulled apart and rebuilt with care. The engine fan, battery, Generator, regulator, Distributor, Coil, fuel pump, etc. are all brand new. The exhaust is a custom Volkstop original design utilizing the well engineered and designed stock beetle exhaust to be used along with Dual Bus resonators and tips. This upgrade allows this bigger engine to breath considerably better than stock while retaining the stock fresh air system which feeds the heat exchangers. What this means is, combined with the Rust free Bus and original heat design, this exhaust allows the heat system to perform as the German engineers designed it while increasing the breathing and retaining the pleasing exhaust note of an original stock Bus engine. The heat on this Bus will be of the best anyone has known!
The transmission has been rebuilt as well as the reduction boxes. The transmission is an upgraded Freeway Flyer' model with much better gearing to live it's happy life with the about twice as powerful than stock engine. New rear wheel bearings, wheel seals, boots, clamps, etc. have been used in every step involved in the rebuild of the transmission. Of course, the Clutch and it's components have been replaced as well! The transmission does not leak a drop!
The brake system has been freshened up with a New Master Cylinder and a close inspection of all components. All wheel cylinders have been either rebuilt or replaced. All shoes are new as well as the rear brake drums. The front drums have been freshly lathed and are in spec. The front wheel bearings have been rebuilt with new seals installed. The brakes are well known to be very powerful on a stock Bus of this year and the original components have been retained which will *** nicely with the engine/ transmission upgrades.
The electrical system has been upgraded to 12 volts to boost reliability as well as making it possible for radio and accessory upgrades. Need to charge your phone? Power your laptop convertor? It's already 12 volts! No expense has been spared along the rebuilt to upgrade this bus to 12 volts. The transmission, engine flywheel, Starter, Generator and regulator, etc. have all been upgraded. The windshield wiper system has also been upgraded to the rare 1967 only 12v assembly.
The body is about as nice as they come! It has had a couple of dings and nicks over the years which if you inspect very closely you may make out but there have never been any serious accidents and there has never been any rust damage. 2 previous owners and the current one have taken wonderful car of this Bus! There is no rust to speak of except on the passenger front floor. There is a very small amount of thinning of the metal in one spot the size of a half dollar. The most likely cause is believed to be from a battery being stored on the front floor while in storage for many years. This spot has been sanded and sealed. The rest of the Bus (and the rest of the floor) shows no signs of any rust.
The dashboard is lovely and does not have any unsightly holes from experimental owners wanting to put non-stock switches or gauges in it's place. Even the original radio block off plate adorns the dash! All door seals have been replaced as well as the wing window latches which are very commonly missing! The entire Westfalia interior has been reproduced with real woods and convenient modifications with more storage and shelves than original. This is the "Will Taylor Custom Coachworks" interior! This is about the 3rd Bus that Will has modified the camper interior in. They come out wonderfully! The woods and materials are beautiful natural tones and colors. Even the headliner has been restored by Will and I think he has done the best job that I have ever seen on a replacement wood headliner. The mood inside is calm and inviting. The light wood tones go wonderfully with the Velvet Green exterior!
Topping it off; The original dealer option roof rack has been completely rebuilt, sandblasted, and powdercoated! The original road wheels have also been restored, sandblasted and powdercoated! Brand New Goodyear tires have been fitted in a slightly larger (and very popular with Bus guys) 195-75-14's. And lastly; Front and rear Safari Windows have been installed! Front safari windows are undoubtedly the most fantastic original option Vw ever produced for Bus owners! The rear Safari window is the greatest option which I think should have been standard with the camper interior. Sleeping in the back is a whole new experience when you have a rear safari! Tall like me? Stick your feet out! A wonderful day out?> Open up all of the windows and let the breeze through!
