1979 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon

Up for sale is my 1979 Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile. I purchased this vehicle last summer in Seattle, it had been in storage for nearly ten years and previously had been driven in Alaska. The work I have done on it is as follows: Sept. 2008 - Replaced existing tires with lightly used tires. Nov. 2008 - Replaced battery. March 2009 - Replaced ignition points due to starting problems. April 2009 - Entire engine rebuild done by Autopia in Snohomish, WA, also replaced front brake pads. The engine rebuild in April exhausted my funds and I really can't afford to keep her anymore. I'll describe as best I can her condition. Body is very solid. The original color was the Mexican Canyon (Beige) but the previous owner did a cheap paintjob directly over it with green. The paint is holding up pretty well, but will not last forever. There are some minor chips in the paint, exposing the original color beneath. Also, they did not paint any of the interior, engine compartment or underneath the poptop. There are three small patches of surface rust (see pictures) on the driver's side door, driver's side rear air vent and the passenger's side wheelwell. Also, behind the spare tire on front of the van, there are some dents that are completely hidden by the spare tire. I have provided pictures of those also with the tire on and off. Other than that, I can't find anything wrong with the body. I don't know know much about engines and this whole experience has been a learning process. In April I was driving the van from Sacramento to Seattle and blew out the engine in the middle of Oregon. I had it towed to my friends VW shop and left it there for several months til I decided I wanted to rebuild the engine and bring it home. Since the rebuild she runs beautifully and I have only put on around 2,000 miles since then, however there is still a minor oil leak. Maybe the size of a dime and only after a drive. I have taken her from Sacramento to Los Angeles and had not hitches whatsoever. One thing I need to note for California buyers, this van will not pass emissions tests as is. It is missing a catalytic converter and something called an EGV valve. If these were replaced, I'm sure it would pass, but just a heads up to anyone that needs to run it through a smog test. Finally, the interior of this van is awesome. The front seats have some tears along the seams, so I use seat covers to help preserve them. I do still have the stool/storage box that sits between the two front seats, in great shape. All cabinets are functional and lock appropriately. I do not know if the sink/stove/fridge work. I don't know how to use them, and never had the opportunity to mess around and try them. I'm assuming the sink and stove are pretty straightforward and can't imagine why they would not work. The counter tops are clean with no scratches. The back seat/bed is in great shape, no tears, as is the top matress in the poptop. The canvas of the poptop is in okay condition. There are some tears that have been patched up or sewn together. The radio does not work and there are no speakers. When I purchased the van, the previous owner had hooked up speakers in the back and a tv above the sink that I uninstalled. He also had an equalizer hooked up but I could never afford to get a proper stereo/speakers installed. This van does include the original front curtain and hammock, but is missing the bug net for the back hatch. I also have the center console table in good shape, and the back seat table in pretty good shape, the wood laminate is peeling up, but it could easily be glued down. I have included as many pictures as I can to give a proper view of this van's condition. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I can also offer delivery options if you are purchasing on the west coast for an additional fee. $75 to San Francisco, $300 to L.A., $350 to San Diego, $400 to Portland and $500 to Seattle. Buyer is responsible for picking up or arranging for transporting the vehicle. I will accomodate requests within reason as best I can. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
