This coupled with the a the unique six-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) automatic transmission propel this nimble underestimated GTI from 0-60 in an impressive 6.9 seconds. The DSG transmission is Formula 1 derived technology that allows for direct electronic shifting achieved by a dual-clutch and dual countershaft automated manual transmission. This gives the DSG the ability to engage the next gear while simultaneously disengaging the previous gear. Also unique to the GTI is the sport tuned suspension, which consists of; MacPherson struts in front and a four-link suspension in the rear.

Safety features include front driver and passenger airbags, front side impact airbags, side curtain airbags, three-point harnesses for all seating positions and LATCH child seat anchors. Also, Antilock Braking System (ABS) with 4 wheel disc brakes, Brake Assist, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESP), and traction control (consisting of anti-slip regulation and electronic differential lock, plus engine-braking assist).
