FYI:  This scanner is not compatible with CAN protocol.

VEHICLE COVERAGE:

This scanner is specifically designed to work with all OBD II compliant vehicles (all 1996 and newer cars & trucks that are OBD II compliant).   Federal Law required in 1996 that all cars and light trucks that are sold in the U.S. must be OBDII equipped.

There are, however, a small number of 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles that are also compliant but not on the list of tested vehicles. To see if your car is OBD II compliant, please look for the following two items:

1. Locate the 16 Pin OBDII connector (see Diagram 1) under the dashboard on the driver side on  most vehicles, but some are located behind the ashtray

2. Check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information Label (see Diagram 2), which is located under the hood or by the radiator on most vehicles.  If the vehicle is compliant, the label will designate "OBD II Certified" and will have a 16-pin OBDII Standard Socket.

Which protocol is used by each manufacturer?

Here is a rough guide for communication protocol for each of the manufacturers (see diagram 1 above for pin locations):

Fords – J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)

GM – J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation)

Chrysler, European, and Asian Imports – ISO 9141

EASY OPERATING STEPS:

n     Make sure car is off

n     Plug the scanner into the cable connector...it should read...Memoscan ME380 

n     Turn the key to the on position, but DO NOT start the engine

n     Press the Enter Key (which is actually the Select key)

n     The scanner will start scanning for the correct protocol

Note: If you press the enter key before the key is turned to the on position, you will receive a linking error message.
