This is the 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible #100212, believed to be the first Mustang built on the assembly line, on the first day of retail production! In addition, in 45 years, no other documented delivery date of April 16 has been produced. Therefore, it is believed this is also the first Mustang sold to the public.
This Mustang has been recognized for decades by Mustang experts as one of the earliest Mustangs built on the assembly line. As early as August, 1984, Mustang historian Jim Smart published an article on Mustang 212 for Mustang Monthly magazine. Two recent articles also clarify the issue. In the October, 2009 issue of Mustang Monthly magazine, Jim Smart discusses 05c pre-production Mustangs and Mustang 212. In the November, 2009 issue of Mustang Monthly magazine, Mustang historian and owner of pre-production Mustang #100002 Bob Fria, clarifies that the pre-production Mustangs were assembled at Allen Park, MI. and not the first Mustangs on the assembly line. Many more articles have been published in magazines concerning Mustang 212, including Muscle Car Review and Auto Week. These articles are all available for public viewing on the internet and in print. It is only now, with several years of extensive research, collaboration with Mustang experts around the world, in depth research on almost every pre-production prototype still in existence, and a painstaking examination of the vehicle itself, that the complete story has been finalized. In the 45 year Mustang history, no evidence has surfaced to contradict this factual account. Also, no other Mustang with a retail DSO and a lower VIN number than 212 has ever been discovered in those 45 years. Please read the full text, the corroborating evidence scanned in the photo section, click on the video link, and view the photos of the vehicle, components, and documentation. Note-All reference material has been gathered from books, magazines, internet sources, etc. that all exist in the public domain and are available for public viewing.
This is a serious, legitimate listing for one of the rarest and most desirable Mustangs in the world. More than 9,000,000 Mustangs have been manufactured since 1964, and #100212 is believed to be the first off the assembly line. This is truly a historical vehicle.

Prior to regular factory retail Mustang production, approximately 211 pre- production units were hand assembled at the Prototype warehouse in Allen Park, MI. These coupes and convertibles are all easily identifiable by an 05C (March 5th) scheduled build date. These vehicles were built for, and their DSO (District Sales Office code) reflects- engineering tests, research and study, The New York World’s Fair, promotional and display purposes, and shipped to such racing teams as Holman-Moody and Alan Mann Racing in England. The DSO is found on factory documentation and the vehicle identification plate (door tag). None were intended initially for sale to the public. Number 100001, now on display at the Henry Ford Museum, was built along with all other Pre- Production Mustangs in Jan./Feb of 1964. It has now been proven that #001 was not the first vehicle off the assembly line. In fact #001 was randomly hand assembled along with the other Pre- Production cars at Allen Park. It was originally assigned to Ford of Canada District Sales Office, to be displayed at Ford of Canada showrooms coast to coast, then be returned to Dearborn. It was accidently sold by an over-zealous salesman to a pilot in Newfoundland, Canada. It was later recovered by Ford, and put in the museum.
First day of scheduled factory retail production, for sale to the public, was March 9, 1964. On that day, it is believed production began with VIN number 212. This vehicle has Factory internal markings to distinguish the car as "JOB 1". Mustangs with a scheduled build date of March 9 are easily identifiable by an 09C (March 9) code on factory paperwork and the door tag.
According to research, Mustang Convertible 100212, is believed to be the first scheduled Mustang built for sale to the public on March 9, the first day of production. The vehicle was owned by the same gentleman from 1982-2007. It was in the Towe Auto Museum in California for 2 tours totaling almost 10 years. In 2006, William Clay Ford borrowed the car for his granddaughter’s wedding in Florida.
Lee Iacocca and the marketing team devised an ingenious advertising launch for the Mustang. On the evening of April 16, 1964, a 60 second commercial was displayed on the three major networks, ABC, CBS, AND NBC, inviting everyone to flock to the dealerships on April 17, the first day of availability to the public. This also coincided with the introduction of the Mustang on April 17 at the New York World’s Fair. The marketing campaign was an overwhelming success- almost 22,000 Mustangs were sold the first day and over 400,000 in the first 12 months.
Mustang Convertible 100212 was sold at Powell Ford in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. The dealership delivered the Mustang to the new owners on the evening of the 16th, even though the official first day of sale was the 17th. It is believed to be the first Mustang sold to the public. Among the extensive documentation is the original Internal Bill of Sale, which indicates on the bottom "Retail Delivery 4/16/64." and is initialed by the Sales Manager.
