Historical Background
- The brief Story of The Csepel Motorcycle Works and Pannonia motorcycles…
The first motorcycle in Csepel was manufactured in 1929 at Weiss Manfred Works (WM). Mass production was launched in 1931 but the dynamically increasing output was cut by World War II. After the fully destroyed factory has been re-built, the manufacturing of 100ccm, then 125ccm models was continued. The introduction of 250ccm twin-piston, then single-piston Csepel models was a great leap forward in the life of the factory.
The first motorcycles named “Pannonia” were the successors of former Csepel 250 model. The new “Pannonia” motorcycle had re-designed chassis and suspension and came to the market during Autumn, 1954. The first model named “Pannonia TL” gave a dynamic growth to the factory being a modern, very reliable bike at that age. The race versions of the first Pannonia models proved to be successful as well; the 24-hour Bol d’Or Trophy in France was won by Istvan Reisz and Gyorgy Kurucz of Hungarian Motorcycle Racing Team in 1956. Then the further new models have been developed, such as “Pannonia TLT, TLB (T3/T4) and TLF” that had the same market success and became “status symbol” in Hungary. All of these models can be found in this special collection!
The most popular Hungarian motorcycle make was sky-rocketing; the factory could not meet the emerging demand not only in the domestic market but in the export markets too. After the ongoing success of T1-TLB models, the new T5 model was introduced in 1964 and became the Pannonia motorcycle model manufactured in the largest series of all times. The T5 model was exported to several markets all over the World, even to the former Soviet Union (Russia) in large series. Seeing the great success, the management of the factory did not change the main concept of this single-cylinder model for a long time, however, a variation of different new prototypes and motocross models have been designed and built in small series. Until the factory has been closed on 24th of October, 1975, the further, new models were the rather the (export) variations of T5 having different accessories and decorations such as new colors, chrome surfaces or luxury equipment.
- Words about sidecar “Duna”
After several prototypes, the sidecar model “Duna OK-3” has been launched to manufacture in Hungarian Dockyard and Crane Factory at Vac in 1959. This sidecar primarily used to be attached to Pannonia motorcycles, however, it could be adjusted for use with other bikes as well. The former torsion spring was changed to leaf spring, the boat-unit was made of light alloy (aluminium) by extrusion. The back-rest was made with spring-mattress and was removable to gain access to the trunk. The Duna OK-3 sidecar did not have own braking system. The strong feather-bed chassis of Pannonia bikes proved to be excellent for use together with OK-3. The sidecar was quite popular in this era, the factory manufactured some 80,000 units between 1959 and 1975.
The main motivation to design and manufacture this scooter was the merge between the Csepel Motorcycle Works and the so called “Large-sized Mass Merchandise Works” (former strategic factory for military equipment) that used to have large compactor machines. The scooter was equipped with a two-stroke 8-9HP engine with forced air-cooling and the sway-spring, cone-plate wheel drive was used as a single-sided rear fly as well. The front suspension is an Earles-fork solution. The maximum speed of the vehicle claimed to be 90km/h, the dry weight is 115 KGs. Unfortunately, the sophisticated mechanical solutions applied in this vehicle have exceeded the manufacturing capabilities of Csepel Motorcycle Works at that time, so during the two-year manufacturing period, only 2,500 units were assembled out of this nice and exigent scooter. Nowadays, only a few pieces can be found in private collections and such scooters are surely one of the favorites of its owners…
