1962 Chevrolet Impala Impala
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This auction is for a factory red/red 62 Chevy Impala convertible. This car has the following factory options: 283 CI 2-barrel engine, Powerglide transmission, power steering, 2-speed windshield wiper and washer motor, push-button radio and positraction rearend. All the original drivetrain appears in tact. The build date on the trim tag is 8A...first week in August 1962. The engine code is F0730D which is Flint plant, July 30 and D indicated 283 engine. The generator number is #1107297 and the date code is 2G25 which is July 25, 1962. The rearend has the factory "P" housing and is dated F2162....June 21. The assembly date stamped on the housing is BM062....3:36 ratio June 62. All the engine parts appear to be factory original. The master cylinder has been changed out to a 64-and later bail type top. The car has dual exhaust but I'm sure it has been added.
The car had been parked for many years when I bought it. I replaced the gas tank and sending unit to avoid any problems with old fuel. The engine was tuned up. We bled the brakes and put anti-freeze in the radiator. Added transmission fluid and purchased a new battery. The engine idles great and has a very small amount of smoke out the tailpipes. It's probably valve seals from sitting for so long. The car will run and drive but not on the street!!! The speedometer shows 77488 miles and I do not see anything that would lead me to be this was incorrect. This car should not be driven without a complete mechanical inspection. Especially the brakes!!! The right front grabs real hard but the car will drive up on a trailer. The "cold" light works when started and goes off when it's warmed up!! Headlights and taillights work but the turn signals do not. The headlight dimmer switch will need replaced and the radio needs repair. Basically...all of these issues would be addressed with a complete restoration. The power steering hoses and the rear transmission seal have small leaks. There are not any leaks associated with the rearend.
The hood has rust holes in the front and will probably need to be replaced. The lower part of the front fenders have had rust repair done and it is popping out again. But lower patch panels are available. The bottom part of the quarter panels and wheel house will need repair. Lower halves are available for that as well as full quarter panels. It just depends on how you would like to restore your car. The deck lid has a couple of dents but is probably useable. The front floor pans are rusted in the outer corners. You could patch the corners or just replace the front pans. The rear floor pans and the pans under the rear seat will need to be completely replaced. The trunk is nice with only a couple of pinholes. Some would just patch the holes while others would just replace the whole trunk floor. The frame appears to be in good shape and I did not see any evidence of it ever being involeved in a wreck. The side moldings are in excellent condition. Some of the anodizing is just starting to turn but they would make excellent cores for reanodizing!! The driver's side door panel is off but is included.
The trim tag has a build date of 8A as mentioned earlier. The trim and paint codes are 886 and 923...both factory red colors. Also on the trim tag is "WHT TOP" for the white convertible top. Also stamped is BODY SL 3721 and I believe that stands for the 3721 convertible built at the St. Louis plant. The interesting part of this trim tag is the late build date...first week of August. This car was the 218674 built in St. Louis out of a total convertible production 68422 V8 cars built at all plants. This is probably one of the last 62 convertibles built as the change over to the 1963 production had to start about this same time!!
The car will need a total restoration but the nice part about that is most everything it needs is available!! I can help the winning bidder with restoration parts. I will give the winning bidder a 15% discount on all the interior and weatherstrip items if ordered within 60 days of purchase of the car. I can also furnish the parts for a 409 4-speed conversion if the high bidder so desires.
This car is also listed locally for sale so I am reserving the right to end the auction early. My reserve is $9995. If the reserve price is met thru this auction, I will honor that bid and not consider any local offers for this sale. High bidder will pay $2000 deposit with 48 hours vis PayPal. The balance can be paid either by wire transfer to my bank or cash. All payments must be clear before the car is removed. The car is being sold AS-IS without any warranty expressed or implied. As with any purchase of this nature, I would advise any potential owners to come inspect the car before they bid. It is available Mon. thru Fri. from 9AM to 5PM for your inspection. The car is being sold FOB Kansas City, MO and all shipping or transporation charges are to be paid by the seller. I will assist with loading here at my shop. I have a clear Missouri title for this vehicle. The descriptions I've listed here are my own observations. Please email if you have any further questions.
Good luck and thank you for your interest!!!
