This auction is for a How To DVD about converting a wishbone into radius rods. This video is from the When Hot Rods Were Outlaw series.

It is super easy to follow and definitely beneficial to the home builder, After watching this you will most assuredly have a good idea of what your getting yourself into if you decide to split a wishbone and turn it into a pair of radius rods. The content is broken up into sections. Basically what to look for in a good core wishbone and how to split it and make the sleeves for the threaded bungs are two of the sections.

As an added bonus there is an intro that is worth the price of the DVD, never aired out-take footage from the mid 50's Smoker's Races at Famoso Raceway in Bakerfield, California. It is a high grade how to with a nice shade tree feel. It runs about half an hour and they will definitly give you the impression that you can build a Hot Rod at home in your own garage ! The guys aren't on a set with every tool known to man. It is one guy using hand tools and a welder in a two car garage. Doing things in a way that is high quailty and with constant attention to detail.

You won't find these DVD's anywhere else and I am working on the guys that produced it to finish one they started about buying a traditional hot rod. They also have How To's on building a Brookville body from the grond up, building a Model A, traditional hot rod frame and that one has Coke bottling the nose, pinching the rails, bobbing the horns, Z'ing and removing all the extra junk, also covers how to pick a good frame where, how to measure it for plumb and square. I'll keep on these guys to get this stuff out because I think they could be useful to many of the guys that are on the fence about building their own hot rod at home. Emails might help them move faster though since they shot them for a club and didn't release them because they didn't want to hassle with distribution.

The last two pictures were added in response to a couple of questions and I added the questions below. The first picture goes with question 2 and the Sandy's Muffler Shop roadster picture goes with question 3, The roadster has nothing to do with the auction.

POPULAR QUESTIONS

  • Does this DVD cover changing the angle of the radius rod ?
Here's the deal with changing the caster angle of the front axle with the radius rod:
When you cut the wishbone and convert them to radius rods you are installing Ford tie rod ends in place of the weldment that you just cut off.
You will notice that many cars have radius rods that point downward at the back end. It is really common and guys just make the brackets whatever length they need to create the builders desired caster angle. But if you want the radius rods parrell with the ground you will need to cut at the front weldment and/ or place the radius rod brackets in a position that will give you the desired look your after. It shouldn't effect the basic set-up though either way. I added a shot of a car we did with radius rods that are parrell to the ground and those did have the angle changed in the front because we couldn't get them parrell without making super short radius rod brackets and changing the angle.. But as I said most guys don't go to the trouble because to do that you must mock up the entire front end and it can be difficult to juggle all those pieces in mock up. You'll understand once you do it.
To answer your question specifically, No it does not cover changing the caster angle because their are so many opinions about the right caster angle for a Ford front end, just do a search for speed wobble or death wobble on the HAMB and you'll see what I mean.
This DVD just gives you a very clear idea of how to do it and what to expect. I would still recommend it if this is the first time you are splitting a wishbone because if this was my first car I would concentrate on sound building procedures and just getting a basic rod finished. It can be a daunting task, building a hot rod, once you get going and keeping it simple to just get the first one under your belt is a big plus. With all that said though if your hell bent on making an anlge change to the front weldment, email the address at the end of the DVD and I'm sure they will walk you through it by email or over the phone.

  • Does this DVD cover extending the wishbone to increase caster angle ?
No, that is really old school and to my knowledge there is only one pre-war car like that, the Sandy's Muffler Shop Roadster, blue roadster pictured above. If you look at that car you will notice it has an extended wheelbase and 12-degrees of caster with an extended  '32 wishbone, '32 heavy axle, Model A spring perches and a Model A style spring. FYI you can't bolt those parts together, the spring perches are totally different between the '32 and the A. That car was strickly a dry lakes racer and not a street driven hot rod, although they did drive it to the dry lakes. The wheelbase isn't so much the reason but to get 12-degrees of caster with a stock K member and a Model A crossmember like it has, Sam Hanks and Sandy Belond decided to tilt the A crossmember from the top so the bottom of the crossmember is a couple of inches forward from stock hence the wishbone had to be lengthened so it could reach back to the K member's ball spocket. I don't recommend it, that is strickly early race car stuff and although that car is very stable at high speed it is two hand fulls to steer arond town. I'm familiar with the Belond car because one of the producers of this DVD owns and rebuilt that car . I didn't have a good shot of the front end of the Belond roadster but you can probably find detailed shots of the front end on the web.
  • Is the blue roadster part of this auction or for sale ? No. It is not part of the auction and it is not for sale. However the How To Buy A Hot Rod DVD I mentioned above was scrpited and shot because the owner went through a huge learning experience with that car and he thought it was info that would be good to pass around to those who might be interested in buying and/or maintaining a true traditional hot rod.
