FRAM® engineers designed every hi-performance air filter to allow the engine to "HOG" all available air. More airflow to the engine can result in increased horsepower and acceleration. The 4-layer cotton gauze material allows more airflow than traditional disposable paper filters for better vehicle performance. For turbo applications FRAM® engineers developed an 8 layer cotton gauze filter designed for additional efficiency with virtually no additional restrictions of air. Each FRAM® AirHog™ Air Filter is washable and reusable for the life of the vehicle.
Q & A:
Is the AirHog™ filter pre-oiled and ready to install? Yes all AirHog™ filters are pre-oiled at the factory to ensure the best performance right out of the box.
How do I clean my AirHog™ filter? General Service Notes: Inspect filter every 6 to 12 months. If the filter has a visible layer of dust, it should be serviced. If the vehicle is operated in severe or high dust conditions, more frequent inspection and service will be required. Never let the filter go beyond 18 months without cleaning.
Prolonged exposure to heat or sunlight may cause the filter to dry out. If the filter appears too dry, but does not require cleaning, a light application of oil is recommended.
Do NOT saturate the filter with oil – it could be harmful to the vehicle’s air induction system.
Directions for Use: A. Cleaning - When cleaning your FRAM® AirHog™ filter, NEVER use gasoline, cleaning solvents, steam, caustic solutions or strong detergents. Do NOT use brush or tools to facilitate cleaning. NEVER spray filter with compressed air or high-pressure water. Always use slow flowing, cool water to rinse filter. Failure to follow these safeguards may result in damage to the filter media.
1) Carefully remove the filter from the filter housing. Inspect and clean filter housing prior to re-installing the filter.
2) Tap the filter against a flat surface to remove any loose or caked-on dirt. Take care not to contaminate the clean side of the filter element.
3) Place filter on a flat work surface and spray both sides of the filter liberally with FRAM™ AirHog™ Air Filter Cleaner. Allow the solution to soak into the filter media for at least 10 minutes.
4) Rinse the filter using cool. low-pressure tap water. Rinse from the clean side.
B. Drying - Allow filter to completely dry naturally. NEVER use compressed air, heat or open flames. Heat may cause the filter media to shrink. Failure to follow these safeguards may result in damage to the filter media. It is very important that the filter media is dry prior to re-oiling.
C. Oiling - When oiling use only FRAM® AirHog™ Air Filter Oil. NEVER use filter without oil. The oil is needed to remove contaminants. Do NOT over oil filter. Failure to follow these safeguards may result in damage to the vehicle.
1) Before applying FRAM® AirHog™ Air Filter Oil, inspect the filter to ensure that it is clean and dry. If necessary, a second cleaning may be required.
2) Sparingly apply filter oil to each pleat. Spray each pleat only once. You will be able to see where the oil has been applied because the filter media color will change to FRAM™ orange. Only a light covering of oil should be applied, do NOT saturate the media.
3) Allow the oil to soak into the filter for 20 minutes. If after 20 minutes any white spots remain, lightly re-apply oil in white areas only.
4) Re-install the filter into the clean filter housing/airbox. Ensure that the sealing surfaces are properly seated
5) Affix the "Do Not Discard" sticker in a highly visible location on the outside of the filter housing to prevent a service technician from discarding your FRAM™ AirHog™ air filter.
Are AirHog™ Filters emissions legal? Yes, because the AirHog™ filters are designed to be factory replacements and drop into the stock air filter housing.
I've heard that high air flow filters can cause problems with mass air flow sensors. Is that true? Typical damage to a mass air sensor is caused by excessive oil accumulating on the sensor. This failure is sometimes caused by overoiling the air filter and is identified as a check engine light. All AirHog™ filters have had the optimal oil loading applied from the factory. This insures that the filters are less likely to bleed off any oil. Furthermore, if you follow our recommended service and cleaning procedures your AirHog™ filter should not cause any problems.
Can an engine get too much airflow? No, an engine is designed to take in a fixed amount of air depending on its size. The vehicle's air intake system causes a fair amount of restriction which can rob the vehicle of the potential to produce power. Using an AirHog™ filter helps to reduce that restriction improving the engine's potential to produce power.
Can I expect a fuel economy improvement by using an AirHog™ air filter? Fuel economy is a function of many factors. One of the factors is air flow restriction. Each AirHog™ filter is designed to allow your engine to breathe better. It does this by providing less restriction in your vehicle's air induction system than a traditional disposable filter. Less restriction and more air can provide better horsepower and better fuel economy. The amount of increase that may be achieved will vary depending on the vehicle (engine, air induction system), driving habits, environmental conditions, and other factors.
How much of an increase in horsepower should I expect using an AirHog™ filter? Each AirHog™ filter is designed to provide less restriction than a traditional disposable filter. It does this by reducing the restriction in your vehicles air induction system. This can result in increased horsepower. The amount of increase you may achieve will vary depending on the vehicle (engine, air induction system), driving habits, environmental conditions, and other factors.
Will I need to make adjustments to my vehicle after installing an AirHog™ Filter? If needed, most modern engine management systems will adjust themselves after a period of time. You may find it necessary to adjust vehicles with carburetors.
What is the Micron Rating and Filter efficiency of an AirHog™ filter? The High Performance filters are rated at +97% overall efficiency at a nominal 26-28 micron (Course Test Dust Rating).
This is based on the following: Test Procedure SAE J726, Section 4.4 Rated Test flow based on most common application for model filter being tested. Filter is oiled between 1 gram/14.7 SQ-IN media to 1 gram/10 SQ-IN media FRAM® AirHog™ Oil is applied to dirty side of filter.
Will the AirHog™ filter void my warranty? Your AirHog™ filter should not void your manufacturer's warranty. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot deny your warranty coverage unless it provides you the part for free or it proves that the part you used actually caused the damage. However, we recommend that you check your owner's manual before installing any aftermarket filter product.
Will the cotton shrink from engine heat? As long as the filter is cleaned properly using the FRAM® cleaning kit you should not have problems with the cotton gauze shrinking.
Can I use another brand of cleaner and oil? We recommend the use of the AirHog™ cleaning products only. These products have been specifically formulated and tested to provide the best performance on our products. Use of other manufacturers' products may degrade or limit the performance of your AirHog™ filter.
