The stock points-based ignition system used technology that dates back
almost 100 years - to the Kettering system, which was introduced in the 1910
Cadillac. Even though you can adjust breaker points for near-electronic ignition performance, they will

replacement interval. With points, the timing will drift; power and fuel economy will suffer.
