Unlike carb temperature gauges, the Iceman carburetor ice detection system warns you when you actually have carburetor ice forming.

The pilot’s control/display fits into a vacant 2-1/4" hole on the panel. A small probe fits into the carburetor itself just upstream of the butterfly valve. Low voltage from the control unit illuminates a super bright LED in the base of the probe while the tip of the probe constantly senses the quantity of light received.

When ice crystals develop, they form on the probe first and reduce the light received at the probe tip. This trips the alarm circuit activating a warning light and audio alarm long before power is effected. Apply full carburetor heat & push the reset switch to silence the audio warning then wait for the light to extinguish. Return to cold air when the ice is gone and the unit is automatically ready to detect ice again.

The system works on normal 12 or 24-volt aircraft electrical systems. A 9-volt battery kit that gives around 20 hours use in aircraft without an electrical supply is available through Aircraft Spruce and Gulf Coast Avionics.

The ICEMAN is a sealed, solid state unit weighing only 5 oz. and is currently approved by the FAA in the United States, certified by CAA, by Transport Canada, and validated in Australia.
