Before your read the complete add, we would like to sum it up for you, Our starter is a better unit in many aspects than most of the low end competitors. We pay considerably more for this unit than most others. It has much heavier windings in the armature and fields. The gear components have much less slack in them compared to the others. This allows for a much quieter and smoother operation. The failure rate is nearly non existent. You may see others selling a similar starter for less, but the quality is usually compromised. Prices on these starters are due to increase considerably by next month. This unit is an absolute must on any V-8 Chevy engine. Click on the purchase history and you will be amazed at how many of these sell.
This starter is an excellent choice for any V-8 Chevy engine from stock to street rod, as well as cars running at the track. No drawbacks to having this type extreme high torque starter.
If you have a 400 sbc engine, you must check that it has three bolt holes on the starter pad. You only use two of the holes to mount this unit, but they must be straight accross from each other. Most all other Chevy engines will have the three mounting holes. The 400 engine usually has two staggered mounting holes in the block, and this will not allow the use of this type starter. We do offer the staggered mount starter in our other listings.

THOSE NOT RUNNING A VACUUM ADVANCE, WILL BENEFIT GREATLY, AS MOST CARS RUNNING HIGH SPARK ADVANCE ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO START WHEN HOT. THIS UNIT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. IT WILL CRANK AN ENGINE FASTER, ALLOWING IT TO START MUCH EASIER.
WE WILL MOST LIKELY NOT EVEN CARRY THE FORMER 2 HP MODEL, AS THIS UNIT IS SUPERIOR. SKIP IS GOING TO ADD A NEW SET OF BOLTS WITH THE STARTER.
SBC / BBC Chevy fits both size flywheels. Rather than list all the Chevy engines, we can just say it's fits almost all of them prior to 99 Gen III. It will NOT fit in a '59 348. This 3 HP High Torque Gear Reduction Starter turns the engine over with a higher level of torque. Producing much more cranking power. These starter motors also feature an offset design resulting in better clearance between the oil pan and the starter. The face plate is adjustable.This will start any stock to extreme built street rod, with ease. Header clearance is usually never a problem with this style starter.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:
A FEW PEOPLE IN THE PAST HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE STARTER GEAR BEING TO CLOSE TO THE FLYWHEEL, AND HAVE HAD TO ADD THE FRONT PLATE SHIM, NOT THE BOLT SHIMS, BUT THE LARGER SHIM THAT'S BENEATH THE FRONT MOUNTING BLOCK, AS THIS MOVES THE STARTER MOTOR BACK AWAY FROM THE FLEX PLATE. WE HAVE ADDED THESE SHIMS AND GEAR SPACERS TO THE STARTER, SO THIS SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE DONE. THE LONG FLAT BOLT SHIMS MAY BE NEEDED TO CORRECT GEAR MESH, BUT USUALLY NOT. YOU WILL SEE THE TWO SHIM PLATES ADDED BETWEEN THE MOUNTING BLOCK AND STARTER MOTOR. NOTICE THE PICTURES BELOW. IN THE FIRST PICTURE THE ENGINE HAS A BRAND NEW FLEX PLATE, AND THE GEAR IS MUCH TO CLOSE. IN THE SECOND PICTURE YOU WILL SEE THE RESULT WHEN THE TWO SHIMS ARE ADDED. JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CLEARANCE. THE REASON THESE STARTERS CAME SETUP TO US LIKE THIS IS THAT THE MANUFACTURER LEANED SETTING THEM UP FOR THOSE RUNNING VERY WORN FLEX PLATES. IF THEY MADE THE STARTER TO ACCOMMODATE NEW FLEX PLATES ONLY THE STARTER WOULD THEN BE TO FAR AWAY FROM THE GEAR WHEN USING WELL WORN FLEX PLATES, AS THE TEETH ARE WORN DOWN CREATING A LARGE GAP BETWEEN THE GEAR AND PLATE.
TO SUM IT ALL UP, THE STARTER IS READY TO MOUNT IF YOUR FLEX PLATE IS NEW OR IN DECENT SHAPE . THOSE RUNNING A 20 YEAR OLD FLEX PLATE WITH THE TEETH SEVERLY WORN ON THE CORNER EDGE, MAY NEED TO REMOVE ONE OR TWO OF THE SHIMS BEHIND THE ALUMINUM FRONT MOUNTING BLOCK. IF YOUR FLEX PLATE IS WORN TO THIS EXTENT, THEN YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT REPLACING IT. WE HAVE THE BEST DEAL ON FLEX PLATES AVAILABLE. SEE OUR OTHER LISTINGS.
AS FOR THE LONG FLAT SHIMS, THEY ARE TO CONTROL HOW FAR THE STARTER GEAR AND TEETH ON THE FLEX PLATE MESH. IF THEY MESH TO CLOSELY YOU MAY NOTICE THE TYPICAL SCRATCHY SOUND WHEN YOU CRANK THE ENGINE, AS WELL AS THE STARTER BENDIX TRYING TO STAY ENGAGED INTO THE FLEXPLATE. IMPROPER MESHING BETWEEN THE STARTER GEAR AND FLEXPLATE IS DEATH ON THE STARTER BENDIX OR AT LEAST HAVE A VERY SHORT LIFE. THE STARTER MAY NEED ONE OR TWO OF THE LONG FLAT BOLT SHIMS, BUT IN MOST CASES IT DOES WELL WITHOUT THEM. THE GEAR SHOULD ONLY MESH INTO THE TEETH ABOUT 35% OF THE WAY. SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD BE MORE, BUT IT SHOULD NOT. THIS IS THE WAY THE FACTORY SETS THEM UP. YOU WILL OFTEN NOTICE THE WEAR PATTERN ON THE TEETH OF THE FLEX PLATE, AND NOTICE THAT THE GEAR DOE'S NOT MESH VERY DEEPLY INTO THE TEETH. DON'T CONFUSE WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WITH WHAT'S IN THE BEGINNING OF THIS NOTE. WHEN WE SAY THAT THE TEETH SHOULD NOT MESH MORE THAN APPROX. 35% INTO THE GEAR, WE DO NOT MEAN HOW FAR THE GEAR TRAVELS TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE CAR WHEN ENGAGING. WE ARE TAKING ABOUT HOW CLOSE THE GEAR IS INTO THE TEETH TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE FLEX PLATE. IF YOU OVER SHIM THE BOLTS, THEN YOU WILL HAVE A VERY STRANGE SOUND WHEN CRANKING, AND THE GEAR MAY START JUMPING OUT AS THE FLEXPLATE COMES AROUND TO AN AREA THAT HAS A BIT MORE WARPAGE OR WEAR. IT WILL WEAR THE FLEX PLATE AND STARTER GEAR PREMATURELY, AND THE STARTER GEAR WILL BECOME VERY SENSITIVE TO WORN SPOTS ON THE FLEX PLATE, ALLOWING IT TO WEAR THOSE AREAS VERY QUICKLY.
PICTURED BELOW IS NOT THE WAY THE GEAR AND FLEXPLATE SHOULD BE IN THE RESTING POSITION. WE KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THE NON WYSCO BRAND 3HP STARTER SOLD BY MANY OTHERS WILL COME TO YOU NEEDING THE SHIMS BEHIND THE FACE PLATE INSTALLED BEFORE USE. WOULD NOT BE SO BAD IF THE MOUNTING PLATE CAME OFF EASILY, OR IF THEY TOLD YOU BEFORE YOU WENT THROUGH THE TROUBLE OF INSTALLING THE UNIT THAT IT'S NEARLY A 100% CHANCE THAT IT WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT THE BEHIND THE FACE SHIMS INSTALLED. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT THE FACE PLATE HAS THE BOLT HOLES OUT OF SPEC FOR ORDINARY USE. THE SHIM BEHIND THE FACE PLATE SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO BE USED IF THE STARTER IS SETUP WITHIN SPECS. ONLY ON EXTREME CASES WHERE THE FLEX PLATE IS EXTREMELY WARPED SHOULD YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE FACE PLATE OFF. WE KNOW THIS TO BE A FACT BECAUSE WE PURCHASED OVER 100 OF THESE UNITS, BUT WE DID CORRECT THE ISSUE BEFORE SENDING THEM OUT. THE OTHER SELLERS DO NOT DO THIS. OUR NEW UNIT IS A FIRST TIME FIT 99% OF THE TIME.

The picture below shows the ideal amount of clearance. About 75-125 thousandths is what's needed. The way we have these units shimmed, should be perfect for most flex plates. I will soon have another pic. showing how much gear mesh is acceptable.
NOTICE THE MOTOR LENGTH AND ALSO TAKE NOTE OF THE ALUMINUM HOUSING ON THE NEW 3 HP STARTER. IT'S BEEN REDESIGNED TO ALLOW FOR THE LONGER MOTOR. THE NEW 3 HP MODEL'S MOTOR IS APPROX. 1.5 INCHES LONGER THAN THE FORMER MODEL PICTURED ABOVE, BUT THE OVERALL LENGTH IS NEARLY THE SAME. THEY ACHIEVED THIS BY REDUCING THE WASTED AREA IN THE ALUMINUM NOSE. THE COMMON MINI STARTER IS VULNERABLE TO HEAT, BUT THIS POWERFUL 3 HP UNIT EASILY OVERCOMES THAT. BEWARE OF SIMULAR LOOKING STARTERS ON THE MARKET, THAT ARE NOT OF THIS QUALITY. I WOULDN'T CALL THEM COUNTERFEITS, BUT DO CONSIDER THEM INFERIOR TO OURS. WE HAVE AN EXTREMELY LOW FAILURE RATE WITH THIS UNIT. YOU WILL NOT SEE A 3HP STARTER ON THE MARKET OF THIS QUALITY, FOR THE PRICE WE ARE ARE OFFERING.

I really would not use any other starter except this unit regardless of engine size. I want all the cranking power I can get. To many times a hot engine with advanced timing would not crank. Mini starters are small to start with, it doesn't take much to put it over it's limit. A hot engine, a very cold tight engine, over advanced timing, not running a vac. adv. those with A/C leaving the compressor on while cranking, a new tight engine, blowers add a tremendous cranking load on the engine, and most of all, big cubic inch and/or high compression engines. This unit is a must in my opinion if you encounter any of the above situations. This starter has the same principal design as the Tilton starter, only at a much lower cost. I do advise using a heavy duty battery, and your battery cables should be heavier than stock to take full advantage of the high horse power starter. Most of you guys already know this, as I never see hot rods or classic cars running small light duty batteries or cables, but just in case, run an 875 or higher cold cranking amp battery with this starter, and go up one step on cable gauge. Not that you have to do this for excellent cranking power, but it will allow you to take full advantage of this high powered starter. You will notice that the engine cranks much faster with this starter, and as you know this allows an engine to start much quicker. This starter actually cost us $30.00 over the former 2hp model.
One more thing I'd like to mention. There are many different mini starters on the market, and failures are common. We are very selective as to what brand we put on the market. I know all to well what it's like to have your starter fail, and the labor of replacing it.

This starter weighs 11.2 pounds. This is less than half the weight of the early style Delco starter. In the world of performance, this is an incredible weight reduction from the front half of your car, for as little as it cost. We have seen others selling a unit similar to this weighing 8-9 pounds. It simply is not a 3hp unit, more like 2hp. The additional weight is in the, armature, and field windings.
Header clearance versus using the large Delco starter is another bonus. Notice the pictures of the unit mounted on an engine. Our store manager was able to easily place most of his hand between the headers and starter. The clearance is more than enough for any headers on the market. The front plate is able to be rotated for even more clearance. Do not be fooled by the physical size of this starter. It produces enough power to easily start engines with up to 15:1 compression ratio. Big block engines are no problem as well, even those in the 600+ inch range. This unit comes complete with new bolts and shims. Most others on the market do not.
This item is brand new, not refurbished , nor is it a discontinued item. Factory boxed. This is a premium series starter. Very few sellers have this new style starter.
This is the starter Skip uses to crank his Stage One 350 428hp engine. His battery is a 24lb Hawker Odyssey dry cell, mounted in rear, running 12 feet of cable to the starter. The engine is not that high in compression, but this starter will crank the engine faster than any we have ever seen, and for longer. Many times we have had to crank for long periods due to flooding or tuning. This starter is amazing on how little amperage it will run on, and how fast it cranks.
