Here is a little story to prove our point.
We had just installed a 383 stroker in a 79 Corvette. We had converted this to electric fans, and could not stop the car from overheating, as these cars are prone to running hot in stock trim, the built up engine worsened the problem. The temp would sore to 240 in as little as ten minutes. We then replaced the oem water pump with one of our chrome long water pumps, and still had the same problem. We had heard the Cat Power water pump did have a good design, and thought we would give it a try, and to our amazement this stopped the over heating problem immediately. Wanting to find out what was different about this type pump, we removed the back plate on the Cat Power as well as the other two water pumps we had tried. What we discovered was the pump vane design in the Cat Power was very much different. It had a curve at each vane, and the others were straight. We now use this line of water pumps exclusively at our shop. Strangely the chrome plated aluminum water pump with the straight vane design, claimed to be high volume. We have used the other brand of water pumps on stock engines that are not modified, and don't have heating problems, but for vehicles with modified engines, this is the pump to run. We proved it. Bottom line to this story, don't use a water pump on your street rod, especially in very hot climate, that's not a true high volume, and the moral to this story, is that not all so called high volume water pumps function the same. We have seen so many people claiming there car is running hotter than they want it to. We now know what to recommend for them.
This pump is half the weight of a cast iron water pump. For those wanting to paint this pump with a contrasting color, it would come out very nice and take painting well. Aluminum water pumps will also dissipate heat better than cast iron. There are no drawbacks to running an aluminum water pump, other than cost.
The late style reverse rotation long water pump came out in approx. 87 on many Chevy V-8's They all operate with a serpentine belt. Make sure before bidding you have this type setup. Many have converted to serpentine belt setups on older engines. This is the pump you will need.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE MANY INFERIOR WATER PUMPS ON THE MARKET. WE FEEL THIS ONE IS THE BEST AVAILABLE. IN YEARS PAST WE HAVE SEEN INFERIOR PUMPS THAT BREAK OFF AT THE PUMP SHAFT CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE CAR. OUR PUMPS HAVE HAD NO SUCH FAILURES.
