excellent unique handbag ~ HEMP ~ Yin Yang embroidery

This is a great hemp handbag made in the himalayan kingdom of Nepal. The gentleman who made it for me is an excellent tailor whom I had the pleasure of meeting on my overland travels throughout asia. Both the hemp material, and the workmanship are of excellent quality. The inside of the purse and the underside of the strap are lined for a soft feel, and all of the seams are well stitched for maximum durability and long lasting use. This particular style is quite simple - there is one large main pouch with a second zippered(1) pocket in front of it. The embroidered flap covers them both and secures shut with a wooden bobble. This handbag style measures approximately 9.5" wide x 9.5" high, with the strap being just under 50" long.

The embroidery is beautiful! It is the symbol, Yin Yang, or in Tibetan its Yab Yum. From Taoism, yin and yang are two parts that form the whole. Female/male, wet/dry, warming/cooling etc. It is a way of explaining the duality of the universe, all phenomena being part yin and part yang in order to be complete. The Yin yang is embroidered within a mandala. Mandalas are circular diagrams that act as microcosms for larger concepts, such as one's own life or the universe. They are widely used as meditation aids in Vajrahyana Buddhism or tantra.

There are many styles of hemp handbags listed in Hither & Yon's ebay store, each of which is handmade. Some can be relatively smooth with a pale color, while others have a rougher feel and are a darker shade of hemp.
