The vertical prayer flags are called Dar Cho in Tibetan and are made to be hung upright on poles, banners, walls, etc. These flags consist of five colored flags sewn together, each with a seperate colored tassle that hangs off the end. The five colours have multiple meanings, such as representing the five directions, the five wisdoms, the five meditation Buddhas or the five mental attributes. They also represent the five realms of existence, the blue flag at the top symbolizes the sky, followed by white for cloud, red for fire, green for water, and yellow for earth.

Each of the five colored flags shows a different design including Windhorse, Tara, and Guru Rinpoche. The Windhorse is the subduer of evil & the vehicle of enlightenment. The central image is that of a horse bearing three flaming jewels, representing the Tibetan Buddhist trinity. This is the triple refuge of the Buddha , the enlightened one, the Dharma , path of Buddhist teachings, & the Sangha , the Buddhist monastic community. Tara is mankinds saviour & protector across the ocean of existence. She is said to have been born from a single tear shed by Avalokiteshvara (Tibetan Chenrezig ), the Boddhisatva of eternal compassion, who wept when confronted with the enormity of the task of easing the suffering of all beings... Guru Rinpoche , also known as Padmasambhava in Sanskrit, was the great Siddha master who founded Samye monastery in Tibet in 8 c.e. and was instrumental in establishing Buddhism in the region. In Tibetan his name means "Precious Teacher", and he is revered as a saint.
