The Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4. Connect the adapter to the Mini-DVI port of the computer and the VGA end of the adapter to an external VGA monitor or projector. You can use this cable in both video mirroring and extended desktop modes.

The item is originally from Apple but saves a lot than buying from Apple store. Carefully choose cheap items from HK etc. Poor manufacturing quality could  seriously affect display quality. 

No need to use it with Apple branded monitor. Third party monitors such as HP, Sony are fully supported. It works well on both Mac os and windows. Just few clicks to switch between MacBook LCD and external monitor or you could use them together.

By the way, the experience of switching MacBook display to a 22" or 24" widescreen monitor is fantastic. I'm just using it. Recommend.

Got a projector? No problem! The original adapter performs smoothly with my brand new Epson W6. If extending the display to big LCD is fantastic, the extension to a projector is awesome.
