COLLECTOR BAG FACE
THIS BAG FACE IS PART Soumak AND PART PILE RUG Soumak (Soumac): This refers both to the carpets made in the soumac technique and the technique itself. Primarily practiced in the eastern Caucuses, this technique produces a flat-woven carpet using weft wrapping in which wefts are pulled over then wrapped under a series of warps Shahsavan: A group of Turkish speaking tribes inhabiting northwest Iran. In Farsi Shahsavan means: \"For those who love the Shah\" - a 17th century title bestowed on warriors from these tribes who were defending Persia\'s northern border. Most of their weavings consist of functional pieces such as saddle bags, mafrashes and animal trappings. Their textiles frequently use the soumak and kilim weaves.
Kurdish rugs are woven throughout western Iran, eastern Anatolia, perhaps to a limited extent in Iraq, and in the southernmost Caucasus. These rugs are stout and solid in structure, usually made in symmetrical knotting upon a woolen foundation. Among older examples, created in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the garden carpets and those in the harshang design, with its repeat of “flaming” palmettes, are outstanding for their range of exuberant colors. Jaffi Kurdish rugs and saddlebag faces, from the Turko-Iranian borderland, show diamond grids, each lozenge containing a latch-hooked figure. Bijar carpets are Kurdish products, as are the surprisingly delicate rugs of Sanandaj (Senneh). Kurdish carpets are woven throughout western Iran, in and around the rugged mountains of Kurdistan. The resilient Kurds descend from the ancient nomads that roamed the area thousands of years ago. They live a semi-nomadic life, either in villages or in tribes away from the cities where they can still practise their traditions and live as their ancestors did.
