rare 1930s Speed-X Radio Mfg Co pre-Logan telegraph key

This is a very early Speed-X Jr. High Speed Key. These were made by the Speed-X Radio Mfg. Company, and predate the Les Logan use of the trademark. It is similar to the later model 501 offered by Logan. The base measures about 2-3/4 x 6-1/2 inches.

This dates from the early 1930s -- see the Speed-X Radio Mfg. Co. ad in the December 1933 issue of R-9 magazine (the ad is reproduced on page 5 of the October 1993 issue of The Vail Correspondent). Note that the feet on the bottom are part of the base casting.

Based on the ads, Speed-X Radio was in business for only two years, 1935 - 37, which makes their keys quite scarce. When Logan took over the Speed-X line in 1937, he added a metal nameplate to the keys, with his name on the plate.

The black wrinkle base finish on this key is excellent, as is the plating on the upper parts. The paddle may be a replacement; otherwise all of the parts appear original and the key seems to have had little use.

I tested this on an oscillator and it works well. A nice hard to find early Speed-X Radio key for the bug collector.
