A very interesting antique violin, professional sound! auctioned at $1 with no reserve! The instrument is a fine 19th century violin stamped "AS" below the button. It is a gorgeous looking and wonderful instrument of quality, luthier-set up and in fine playing condition. The length of back is 35,7 cm, the size is a fullzise. The violin appears to be an old German or old English instrument, that's hard to say as both schools share common features. I tend to say its a Markneukirchen violin from around 1870. The tonewoods are of quality and good selection. The top is a two piece top patinated varnish is especially wonderful, of an aged golden brown reddish color, well worn and in beautiful condition. The violin is well preserved, some minor repairs to the top, back seam is repaired. Small mlousebite :-) in the left lower corner rib. The instrument has been luthier-checked and is set up with a new bridge, soundpost and strings and can be played in concert right away. What a nice even sound it has! The violins warm colorful sound is strong and clear - singing, bright and warm in the upper ranges (generally open and the exact opposite of hollow or mellow) - the sound comes out mature, warm, elegant and clear in the lower ranges. The sound is clear and precise, with warm colors and texture, a beautiful character throughout all ranges. The sound is very well (if not perfectly) balanced from G over D, A towards E and the violin opens up very nicely in the higher ranges. Highly recommended!
