FYI: Regal Empress was originally built as the Greek Line's Olympia in 1953.
The 22,979 grt, 611 foot passenger liner was built by Alexander Stephen and Sons Ltd., Glasgow.
The ship was initially used for the North Atlantic service between New York, Halifax, Cobh, Cherbourg,
Southampton, and Bremerhaven, during the winter season; New York to the Mediterranean and Greece, and later cruising.
The Olympia was laid up at Piraeus in 1974, and the Greek Line suffered financial collapse the following year.
In 1981, the Olympia was bought by Sally Shipping dba Commodore Cruise Line.
Extensively rebuilt at Perama in 1982 and Hamburg in 1983, she returned to cruising as the Caribe I in 1983.
In 1993 she was sold to the newly formed Regal Cruises (New Jersey)
and renamed Regal Empress (the line’s first and only ship).
Regal Cruises' operations came to an abrupt halt in 2003.
The Regal Empress was seized by U.S. marshals on April 18th in a dispute
over a claim against the cruise company for $730,000 for repair work.
The Regal Empress was purchased at auction by Imperial Majesty Cruises in May 2003,
she would replace the OceanBreeze (ex-Southern Cross) who was on her way to the scrap yard.
Imperial Majesty Cruise Line’ newly acquired cruise ship entered service retaining her name
and has been operating on two-day cruises from Ft. Lauderdale to Nassau, Bahamas.
The ship departs from Ft. Lauderdale at 5:30 PM and arrives in Nassau the next morning.
She departs Nassau at 5:30 PM and arrives back in Ft. Lauderdale the next morning at 9:00 AM.
New SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) laws will be implemented in 2010;
the well maintained Regal Empress may not be able to conform. Will her sailing days be over?
