| DATURA SEEDS
The 2009 seed harvest is in and Eddie Dewayne is happy to offer a selection of home-grown Datura seeds, all harvested by hand here in beautiful North Carolina.
These seeds are all from plants grown here on the farm, and we had great results from them all! Datura are grown world-wide, in temperate and tropical locations. The greatest diversity of the Datura occurs in the Americas, from the United Sates south through Mexico.
Datura are woody-stalked annuals that easily reach 6’ in height. The leaves are large and vary in color and shape, ranging from toothy to lobed. The flowers are erect or spreading, not hanging like the closely allied Brugmansia, and the colors vary from white to purple, with some that bloom yellow or pink. Some varities of Datura have double or triple blooms and some are single. The fruit of the Datura is a spiny capsule one to two inches across that, when ripe, will split open to reveal the seeds.
Daturas have the interesting property of being able to change the size of the plant, the size of the leaves and the flowers, depending on the location. Easily grown almost everywhere, you’ll see that the same species that grows taller than a person and produces magnificent blooms when given ideal growing conditions will produce a much smaller plant in every way when the conditions are not as perfect. Datura are planted annually from seed and as a rule they need a warm and sunny space and soil that drains well. Common names include Thorn Apple, Pricklyburr, Jimson Weed, and Devil’s Trumpet.
