The earrings measure approximately 7/8" high without including the hanger x 3/8" wide. The stone pill box is a kind of colorful marble from northern India and measures 1 1/2" wide. Peridot is a bright lime or olive green color, it is the mineral olivine - magnesium and iron-rich silicate. Volcanic action usually creates peridot, and it is found both in igneous and volcanic rocks. The ancient Egyptians called Peridot the "gem of the sun" and began mining the gemstone in 1500 BC. They mined it at night when the stone's natural glow was easier to see. The Romans called Peridot "evening emerald" because it did not darken at night and was still visible by lamplight. Peridot is the birthstone of August.
